Help Need basic advice
Our church has been collecting stuff for Uganda. One donation is a computer with no operating system. I thought that I could install Linux so that at least it will be usable. They will not need anything fancy really mainly word processing etc.
But I have never used Linux and have no idea where to even begin.
There seem to be lots of versions.
If I download one to my computer do I burn it to a CD then install it from there?
How do I do anything on the new computer if it has no operating system installed?
As you can no doubt tell I am totally lost.

The computer is Zycom with IBM monitor.

I recommend Ubuntu
You can get it here - http://iso.linuxquestions.org/ - the link on the left side of the page tells how to burn an ISO
I'm unsure of your computer specs. though
640K memory?

Is the computer to be used by the church or shipped to Uganda? There may be customs issues in transporting electronics into the country. The computer is so very old and obsolete that whatever heavy metals it contains are worth much more than the computer itself.

There are a lot of issues with this seemingly simple computer donation. Talk to the people who are organizing the effort to see what they really need and can use.

Good point. Thanks for mentioning it I will chat to them. I do not know the details just received an email from the Pastor asking me to help out. Poor church thinks I know a bit about computers. They are sadly wrong. lol

Considering he's talking about Uganda, I was going to make the same recommendation.

Peace...
