Activate KDE4 on Fedora 9
I installed Fedora 9, but I can't figure out how to change the GNOME desktop to KDE4. I had this issue with Fedora 8 as well but eventually gave up on it. What's the easiest way to do this?

Any suggestions yet? I still haven't found the answer.

I'm not familiar with FC9 but have you already installed the KDE 4 packages? If so, I imagine somewhere in the GNOME settings (or maybe it's in gdm's setup) you can specify the environment to start when you first login.

Something else to check out. After you get KDE 4 installed, namely kdm, see if you can get kdm setup as the default login manager. Again, I'm not a FC user so I'm guessing here.

Peace...

I couldn't find anything in the settings that did this. And when I go to the package manager and select KDE, it says nothing is available. I would suggest it's a network issue with my VM, but it can successfully download updates and access the internet, so I know that's not the problem.

Are you saying you can't even install KDE using the package manager?

Peace...

No, because it doesn't even show the KDE packages.

I never try it myself but always go with the desktop provided by the distros although a few of them do offer more than one desktop.

It is just as far as I could remember Gnome is alway the standard desktop for Fedora and Ubuntu. If you want a KDE go with Knoppix or Slackware. As Kunubtu is ubuntu with KDE so I don't think it is a good idea to switch the desktop within the same Linux if optimal operation is desired. Even Suse provides an iso for Gnome and another for KDE.

Sounds reasonable, it's just that Fedora 9 was supposed to come with KDE4, and I always like having the latest technologies (which Fedora is - it's basically like a beta version of Red Hat, if I'm not mistaken. Most of the features that get put into Fedora first get put into that one later.)
