Advantages of Ubuntu/Linux
I've been looking to install Ubuntu or Linux to triple-boot my pc. There are a couple of things i want to know, which one is better, and what advantages does it have over Vista, XP or Leopard?? What disadvantages does it have over them?? I have got a powerful machine (E6850 @ 3.00Ghz, 2 or 3g of Ram already running XP and Vista). Just looking for advice but thanks in advance

Hi CouchMaster,

Ubuntu is not Linux. Linux is a kernel. Each Ubuntu release is based on a version of the kernel plus upgrades to the other software packages that are included in the release.

Ubuntu is more like a flavor of Linux compared to the other Linux (flavors), i.e. distributions.

Enough of the nitpicky stuff, bottom line: Windows sucks, Macs are expensive, and Linux rules.

Thanks for the site, it sounds all well and good, but i am addicted to the vista desktop, specifically the search feature in the start menu. Is there any flavors of linux that can make a fairly good replica of it??

Also, are there any users of linux that can say what they specifically like and dislike about it??

thanks guys.

This kind of feature isn't a "Linux" kind of thing but a desktop environment or window manager kind of thing. GNOME, KDE, Xfce are the main desktop environments available for Linux these days. They aren't the only ones but the main ones in use. You might want to consider running KDE on your system since that "feels" more "Windows-like" to me. KDE 4 looks damned sexy to me.

If you really want a sexy desktop, check out Enlightenment. You can see screenshots here. Since you're new to Linux, I would suggest getting a liveCD with KDE installed as the desktop environment and see what you think of it.

Good luck!

Peace...

What does it search? How about Google Desktop? http://desktop.google.com/linux/index.html

The lastest version of Ubuntu has made me grow tired of it. Though I'm still using it on this computer (too lazy to switch), on my other computer I'm using Solaris.

What did you grow tired of? Do you prefer Solaris to Linux now? I haven't used Solaris in years.

Peace...

I think ubuntu is probably one of the easiest linux distros to start out with. Their software repositories are kept fairly up to date, and don't require a user to compile new software. There is also a lot of help on the internet for ubuntu. The newest version also added support for Compiz (which is the "cool desktop accelerator" that makes things pretty). That being said, I think Sabayon Linux it a very cool distro to try out. They have live DVD full of games, browers, cool 3D effects, and the best part of all: nVidia and ATI drivers built in. http://www.sabayonlinux.org/ for the most part everything works out of the box. The live DVD is fun to play with, and it comes with Gnome, KDE, Enlightenment, and some other. If you don't know those are all desktop management systems, once you play with them you will understand more.

Good luck and I hope you enjoy.....
