About the newline problem and encoding problem re: text file conversions.

Life would be a lot easier if we could live in a Linux-only world and if applications never required data from other sources. However, the need to get data from Windows, MS-DOS, or old Macintosh systems is all too common. This kind of import process requires some conversions to solve file format differences; otherwise, it would be impossible

Read the comments for:

Got other methods? Perhaps a sed method to do the conversion - post it here in this thread.

Google search for SED one liners or AWK one liners. You can do it with both.

I do this alot in Dos batch files because when I use the unix utilites that have been ported to DOS, they still like to output everything with a LF. So the last step in my batch file is usually something like "gawk 1". But in dos batch files you could also do something arbitrary like to do a findstr on some arbitrary string that it will never find in the data. It will then reoutput the data with a CRLF.

Some of this also depends on what version of AWK or SED you are using.

In Windows, if I just want to convert a file from a Unix format to a Windows/Dos format I just use a program called EOL Covnverter. You can find it at totato.com. It is free.
