KDE 3> How to clear cached typed data
Hi all, this is driving me nuts!, I share my computer with a few people and although I have different users set up it is sometimes impractical to shutdown the GUI then logout, have some one else login ect.

I would like to know how to clear items from KDE as typed URLS in the browser address bar, typed entries into the find file, and all those kind of things.

I looked everywhere for this answer including forums, the KDE manual and the KDE and Red Hat websites. Maybe I'm not wording my search correctly, I tried terms like 'clear personal history'.

Also while I'm on the subject is there any way to search through the help files on KDE I can find the index and can do a FIND on the page that I'm on but can't find a way to search through all the help files for a particular word/phrase.

Thanks for your help.

Bad news here, you have to clear from three different places.

To clear the typed urls, right click on the url bar in the typable area and choose empty contents.

To clear the history, open up the history folder and right click on one of the history items and choose clear history. Confirm to clear it.

To clear the cache, you need to go into settings--configure konqueror. and go to proxies and cache. Go into the cache tab and clear it. But just like IE does, konqueror leaves stuff behind when clearing the cache, so you will need to manually delete it on occasion also. Under the /home/username/.kdeshare/apps/kio_http/cache you will find leftover entries for the cache.

For the find files setting, you will need to manually open up the /home/username/.kde/share/config/koquerorrc file and manually delete out the entries under the history area.

There also appears to be some sort of history that I have not discovered where it is located yet either.

Linux is set more to keep seperate users seperate, then for ease of clearing out stuff so that people cannot see your things.

I am not sure how you have your install setup, but I have mine, so that when click the logout button in X, it takes you back to a login screen, similar to windows. Much faster than stopping x, logging out and the logging back in and starting X.

I am running Mandrake 8.2 on this machine and I have a friend that just installed the latest Redhat and his does that also.

Thanks for the reply Brooks. The info you gave me was EXACTLY was I was so desperatly(and unsuccesfully) looking for.

I did everything you said and it worked perfectly, other than the fact the some of the files/directories were named differently on my system that the ones you said. However it was enough for me to find the files I needed. I had tried finding those cache files myself but coming from a MS background I am trying to get used to the Linux file system. I know right were to find config files for Windos but there are so many files in so many different places with Linux.

I must have turned off the HISTORY of Konqueror somewhere along the way as I have no option to view the history, and when I did nothing came up.

As for the logout options, I must have not configured it properly during my Red Had 7.3 installation because I do not have the option to logon as another user. Something I will have to look into.

Thanks again for an extremely helpful and accurate response.

You are welcome.

I just started using Mandrake as a desktop recently, so I am still learning about the things needed with X.

I have used redhat as a server for quite awhile, but I don't use X very much with those. Mostly command line with the server services.
