You might try www.linuxiso.org as a starting point -- a number of distributions are available for downloading. Learning Linux/Unix is very much a personal matter -- but I'd recommend starting with the basics (logging in, basic commands, etc.). Once you are comfortable doing that, move on to redirection, combining commands (pipes/filters, command-line operators) and shell (Bourne, ksh) programming. When you are comfortable with these, you have your choice of directions: perl + mySQL or java (for example) for web development; C/C++ for classical development, system administration (a new set of commands and utilities) and system security and networking (for example). The key is fundamentals; everything you understand about how Unix/Linux operates will serve you well no matter what direction you take.
