Hai all,

I have installed Linux 7.0 on an compaq deskpro ep series machine. The Linux has been installed succesfully but I am not able to configure the GUI mode in it.
I have tried all possible options, please help me in this regards

Can you atleast get to the shell prompt, I mean the Character User Interface(CUI)? If yes then try using this command -

xconfig [enter]

This should start the process for configuration of the X-Windows or the GUI. May be you need to change the video card in the installation. What is the video card you are using now?

See if you can find the exact video card in the Linux installation or check with one of the Generic Video cards that Linux offers drivers for.

So, Try changing the VGA card. Thus also the drivers would change.

Thanks for your reply, yes I am able to get into CUI mode and I have tried the command xconfig. I have the Matrox AGP card in my system. Is this the problem that caused for the GUI mode.

What happened when you used the xconfig command? Were you able to find that AGP Card in the list? See if the driver for that card is present or try with one of the generic drivers that Linux provides and see what happens.

Also what driver/card is currently selected currently?

As far as I know Linux should install the driver for that from its vast range of generic drivers.

When i type the command xconfig , it is taking the exact display card i.e matrox 200AGP but when we specify the pixels i am not able to run the startx command, it is finding some porblem

Do you get any error message? If yes then what is it?

If the drivers are installed correctly for that card then there should be no problem.

What happens after you type the startx command?

The error basically comes up when the X server isnt configured properly. Type the command setup and see if you can configure the X Sever properly.

Also use the below link to see if you've the hardware compatible to use Linux - RHHardware

Forgot to add that the setup would start an automatic probing for the hardware you've. So see if the correct drivers are installed and retry.

After proper configuration(of X Server) in the last step where you would have to set the screen resolution there would be option to test the settings. See if the GUI appears in the test.

Try this and get back.

Dear Pvc9,

Thanks for the support you have given. Yes I have even tried with the command setup and choosing the option xconfiguration.
The system is porbing the exact hardware but when we set the screen resolution and give an test there the error is occuring.

Hope so there is some problem with the display card itself.

Now that cannot be ruled out. Try replacing the card and try with the setup command and see what happens.

I'm having the same or similar problem. Linux recognized my video card and my monitor but for some reason it won't boot into a gui screen just text.

When it goes to test everything it says everything was okay and when the computer restarts it will boot to the graphical screen.


this is my first time installing it so I'm still trying to figure out what to do.

I'm confused by this. I guess you meant CUI and not graphical screen.

I also wanted to ask you if you are using the system as a dual boot with 2 OSes or just the Linux on it?

I am using just using a single OS. I figured out what was wrong with mine. For some reason it wasn't able to configure the video card and monitor completely because they are pretty old. I went back through the setup again and corrected the problem. I ran 'startx' and it started up and everything seemed okay. Now just trying to figure out how to use the OS is the problem.
