Angry Lost 5gb Space after LInux Installation
I have a client who, after a failed Linux installation seems to have lost 5gb of his 60GB HDD

FDisk and Fdisk /mbr have failed to rectify the problem.

The user also still gets his dual boot menu, even though he now has uninstalled linux

Any advice would be helpfull.

Regards,

Rob.

What is the other OS installed? Is it Win XP? Fdisk might not work. But did you check in the Delete drives, Delete Non-DOS partitions in Fdisk? Wont that work too?

In general, I don't believe Windoze knows how to deal with non-Windoze partitions (such as Linux) and so ignores them. You can use the Linux fdisk to remove the Linux partition(s) -- probably at least one linux native partition and one swap partition. Since you've removed Linux already, you will need a boot disk (with fdisk on it) in order to remove the Linux partition(s). If you don't have a Linux boot disk, you can also use utilities such as Partition Magic to remove the Linux partition(s). The last option is to reformat/repartition the drive; the format should restore any space formerly occupied by Linux.

Hope this helps.

Yes,
As codejockey said you can use the Partition Magic too. That'll definetely work. Here is another such partition manager. Might want to check with this too -

Are you sure he lost space? It could be that the when they say 60GB it is using 1000Kb = 1 Mb instead of the proper 1024Kb = 1 Mb. SO when you look at the drive it shows 55GB (b/c the drive really is only 55GB)

Gibble,
If only he had mentioned that he was using those numbers for calculating the size of the HDD then we could have given him that info. So not sure if he is calculating using the numbers or checking the space that the OS shows him.

But its been quite sometime for now. Hope he posts back.
