problem with MBR?
Hello,
I am trying to install redhat 7.3 8.0 or mandrake.
Once I boot from any of those distros it gets to a partition check and hangs.

I have an 80 gig partition with XP professional on it with at least 50 gigs left. For some reason if I try partition magic to resize my partition I also get an error. It sounds like my mbr is the problem but I really don't want to format the whole drive and loose all my data! Would like to duel boot into both XP and Linux.

Any ideas?

Do you mean by 50GB free that you have 50GB of free unused space ?
If so,when you boot with the Red Hat install cd,you can choose to save existing partitions and use free space.
If you mean you have 50GB of formatted disk space and PM gives you an error, what is the error message and #?Also, what version of PM are you using and are you using it from within XP or are you running the rescue floppies?
If from within XP it's probably a disk in use error. You might want to try the resize operation using the floppies.
HTH

Hello,

I only have one partition thats fromated in NTFS, this partition has 50 gigs left for linux.
The red hat boot up does not get far enough to ask me if I want to use the existing space. It looks at the partitions such as hda1, then hangs. The bad side is , my floppy drive is broken so I can't make the rescue disks in partition magic. The version of partition magic is 7.0.

Thanks

Resolved
Thank you very much.
This issue was resolved by fixing the floppy and using partition magic to boot from.

That's great to hear!
Just curious as to how you fixed your floppy? Did you check cable, dust in drive or just replace whole darn thing?
You never know,it might help others with similiar problem.
Which Linux distribution did you end up going with? How do you like it so far?

Hello Lynch!

I ended up replacing the whole drive since they are about 15 bucks now.
The real issue actually was Win XP, after it updated to service pack 1, the stupid thing actually changed my partition to dynamic! Partition magic can't do anything with a dynamic partition so I had to delete the whole partition and start again.

I chose Red hat 8 but still might be a little partial to Mandrake .
Only problems I'm having are my soundcard not being recognized as well as Horrible performance with my gforce 4 mx.
