Let me start by saying, "I'm a newbie."

How do you shut it down safely from the graphical mode? There are three icons on the screen, and I can't find the option anywhere. If I open a terminal (I guess) and enter "shutdown -h now" it says invalid command.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Are you using GNOME/KDE?

I dont think that would matter much though! There should be a button for both and I guess its titled Log Off! (not sure as I'm not using linux now)!

Once you do that, you'll be taken back to the login prompt box. AFAIK, the option to shutdown, restart... will be there!

What is in the menu when you click on the button(the one on the tray)

Right-click an empty space on the desktop;you should have the logout option at the bottom of the list that appears. That will give you the option of halt, reboot or logging on as another user.I always have the universal power symbol next to the clock in the bottom panel to use for logout. It's the circle with the little line on top
The "shutdown -h now" command requires root priviledges. The graphical logout has permissions set by default so you can halt the machine as a regular user.
