is there a known virus going about that stops your webcam working properly? I may have such a thing! My webcam has stopped working on my desktop ( after several years of no probs) Ive downloaded latest drivers reloaded software atc but all I can get is a still picture when I try to use it in any internet application such as a chatroom. However when I plugged it into my laptop it works perfectly again! This would kid of eliminate the cam its self as faulty?
So is there any such virus & if so how can I get rid?

A "webcam" virus? I've never heard of one.

Let's see what's auto-starting and running, and if any obvious issues need to be addressed.

Go here and click the green "Download latest version" link to download and save HiJackThis 2.0.4

After it's been downloaded and saved, close all open windows first, then double-click the saved file to install it.

Allow it to install in its default location - C:\Program Files.

After it's been installed, start it and allow its main window to load.

Uncheck "Do not show this window when I start HiJackThis".

Click "Do a system scan and save a log file".

When the scan is finished in 30 - 60 seconds, a log file will appear.

Save that log file.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire log file here.

Why hasn't Windows Vista SP1 been upgraded to SP2?

Click Start - Run, then type in MSCONFIG and then click OK - "Startup" tab.

Write down only the names in the "Startup Item" that have a checkmark next to them.

If the "Startup Item" column isn't wide enough to see the entire name of any of them, widen the column.

Submit those names here in a vertical list, and make sure to spell them exactly as you see them there.

Start HiJackThis.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click on the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere.

All I need are the names in the "Startup Item" column. I don't need any of the information in the other columns.

There's no way that you can copy-and-paste the names from within the System Configuration Utility window. You would need to provide screenshots or images of that window.

I request this information every day from others here, and they have no problem with writing down the names and submitting the list here.

That's one of the most severely bloated startup lists that I've seen here in 10 years.

Some of them don't need to auto-start and run at all, and others can be manually started when needed.

Go back to Start - Run - MSCONFIG - OK - "Startup" tab.

Remove the checkmark in these entries in the "Startup Item" column.

After you're done, click Apply - OK/Close - Exit Without Restart.

Go to Start - Run - SERVICES.MSC - OK.

Expand the services window so you can see the list more clearly.

Double-click on these entries, one at a time, to open their properties window:

ArcSoft Connect Daemon

Adobe Active File Monitor V5

Google Update Service

Google Updater Service

Windows Defender

If "Startup Type" is set on Automatic, change it to Manual, then click Apply - OK.

If "Startup Type" is already set on Manual, close the properties window for that entry.

After you're all done, close the services window and then restart the computer.

Adobe Reader 10.1.2 needs to be updated to 10.1.3

Ask Toolbar needs to be uninstalled.

Babylon Toolbar On IE needs to be uninstalled.

Conduit Engine needs to be uninstalled.

FrostWire 4.21.3 needs to be uninstalled.

Java(TM) 6 Update 31 needs to be updated to 1.6.0.32(6 Update 32)

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware(unknown version) needs to have its update feature run so it can update its definition files and update to 1.61.0.1400

Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007 needs to be updated to SP3

Mozilla Firefox 3.6.13 needs to be updated to 12.0

SUPERAntiSpyware(unknown version) needs to have its update feature run so it can update its definition files and updated to 5.0.0.1148

Hi, done all you asked & I think my computer is booting up much faster now - thanks!
Unfortunately I still have the problem with the webcam! When I try & use it to chat or on a webcam test site, al I get is a dark still picture! If I open the webcams program it works fine there. It also works fine on another computer which makes me think there is still a problem with this one?
