Worm/Generic2.BLRH Help
I essentially allowed the wrong program access to my PC but managed to catch this.

AVG reported this and I copied it as is:

"";"C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\vbc.exe (1964):\memory_00400000";"Virus identified Worm/Generic2.BLRH";"Infected"

2 files were detected. One was able to be quarantined while the other is inaccessible.

There are no obvious symptoms of this worm.

I disabled MalwareBytes, AVG, and Windows Defender before running.

Thank you very much for any assistance you can provide. Also, I'm not afraid of losing any data on my PC. So if it comes to just wiping it all, I'm fine with that.

I would strongly suspect that to be a false detection by avg
that file is a genuine net framework file and the AVG detection is a heuristic detection
before doing anything do a scan with an alternative AV to double check

Run an online antivirus check from one of the following sites

http://www.eset.com/online-scanner
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
http://security.symantec.com/default.asp?

Bitdefender reports no problems. AVG wasn't coming up with this until yesterday, though.

EDIT: Ran it without Heuristics on and am still coming up with the worm/generic2.BLHR if that matters

It doesn't matter if you turn off heuristics in AVG, that detection is still a generic heuristic detection from AVG try another scan from a different online site to be sure

But when only 1 antivirus detects what appears to be a genuine microsoft file as a problem, we are almost certainly looking at a false detection

lets be sure & get a copy of the file for examination

Download suspicious file packer from http://www.safer-networking.org/en/tools/index.html (direct download http://www.safer-networking.org/files/sfp.zip )

Unzip it to desktop, open it & paste in the contents of the quote box below, press next & it will create an archive (zip/cab file) on desktop

please upload that to http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/index.php?board=1.0 so we can examine the files

Just press new topic, fill in the needed details and just give a link to your post here & then press the browse button and then navigate to & select the files on your computer, When the file is listed in the windows press send to upload the file

Quote:

C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\vbc.exe

the file is totally clean and is a signed file from microsoft that definitely hasn't been altered in any way

It definitely looks like an AVG false positive

I have just noticed some entries in teh logs that don't look right
I think that there might be something there after all but not what AVG detected

Delete any existing version of ComboFix you have sitting on your desktop
Please read and follow all these instructions very carefully
Do not edit or remove any information or user names etc, otherwise we cannot fix the problem. If you insist on editing out anything then I will close the topic & refuse to offer any help.

Download ComboFix from Here or Hereto your Desktop.
As you download it rename it to username123.exe

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop and run from the desktop and not any other folder on your computer**
--------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
  • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus and anti-malware real-time protection and any script blocking components of them or your firewall before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results" or stop combofix running at all
  • Click on THIS LINK to see instructions on how to temporarily disable many security programs while running combofix. The list does not cover every program. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
  • Remember to re enable the protection again after combofix has finished
--------------------------------------------------------------------
2. Close any open browsers and any other programs you might have running
Double click on renamed combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
If you are using windows XP It might display a pop up saying that "Recovery console is not installed, do you want to install?"
Please select yes & let it download the files it needs to do this. Once the recovery console is installed Combofix will then offer to scan for malware. Select continue or yes.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" for further review

****Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall or freeze ****

Note: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser.
Note: Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you -- please tell us when you reply. Read HERE why we disable autoruns

Please do not install any new programs or update anything (always allow your antivirus/antispyware to update) unless told to do so while we are fixing your problem. If combofix alerts to a new version and offers to update, please let it. It is essential we always use the latest version.

Please tell us if it has cured the problems or if there are any outstanding issues

Please attach the combofix report not paste it in so the forum software doesn't edit out your account details with the naughty word filter

Ran ComboFix. Log is attached.

EDIT: Also, ComboFix seems to have played with some registries. Most desktop icons have broken directories and programs now have to be run as an administrator

that is common with certain anyiomalware tools including combofix & happens on about 50-60% of Vista or W7 computers, but no-one has yet managed to fiond out exactly what triggers it, although a reboot or sometimes reboot twice cures it

Run a full scan with AVG & see if it detects anything now please

but before you do that please do this so we get copies of the files combofix deleted to submit to antivirus companies to get them detected

can you please go to C:\qoobox & right click the quarantine folder, select send to compressed(zip) folders
that will make a zipped copy of the quarantine folder
then
please upload that to your last thread at ( or a new topic there if it is easier for you ) http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/index.php?board=1.0 so we can examine the files and submit to antivirus companies if needed

Just press new topic, fill in the needed details
In the subject box please put: Files for DVK01

In the body of the post paste the contents of the code box:
Code:
combofix Quarantine folder from
http://forums.techguy.org/virus-other-malware-removal/1057533-worm-generic2-blrh-help.html#post8386743

& then press the browse button and then navigate to & select the files on your computer, When the file is listed in the windows press send to upload the file

No problems at all. I ran AVG and nothing was found (except some tracking cookies which got cleaned up. I hadn't been scanning for them before.) The Worm/Generic2.BLRH is gone as well.
