| Internet access, but most software can't connect. I have an odd problem with internet access. I have an internet connection and can acess the web in internet explorer (e.g. to submit this question) or use Skype, but most other programs can't connect including Chrome, Thunderbird, Avast updater, and most software installers that rely on an internet connection. Everything had been working fine before last Monday. I first noticed the problem when my accounting software Quickbooks was "unable to get the network address of server" when trying to open a file located on the same hard drive. After this error, I uninstalled AVG and switched to Avast because AVG was giving false positives for one of the Quickbook files and I thougth AVG may have been causing the problem. That didn't solve the Quickbooks problem and then I noticed the other software could nolonger connect to the web. I have turned off firewalls, bypassed the router, released and renewed ip addresses, restored Windows to a previous date, flushed the DNS cache, stopped and restarted the DNS client, run full virus and malware scans, tried Network Troubleshooter, switched to Google's public DNS, all to no avial. Other computers connected through the same router have full internet access and no other problems. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. | Thanks for the quick reply. I first tried to uninstall AVG using the Uninstall or change program control panel, but there were still traces of AVG (short cut still in the Start programs list, AVG add-on in Internet Explorer). I looked for a solution online and found the AVG removal utility and ran that too. AVG appeared to be gone, but looking back in the events log I found the following Service Control error: The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load: AVGIDSHA I reset the TCP/IP successfully: ----------------------------------------------------------- Microsoft Windows [Version 6.1.7601] Copyright (c) 2009 Microsoft Corporation. These errors seem to have started approximately when I switched to Safe Mode and ended after restarting. They include: The winlogon notification subscriber <GPClient> was unavailable to handle a notification event DCOM got error "1084" attempting to start the service ShellHWDetection with arguments "" in order to run the server: {DD522ACC-F821-461A-A407-50B198B896DC} DCOM got error "1084" attempting to start the service EventSystem with arguments "" in order to run the server: {1BE1F766-5536-11D1-B726-00C04FB926AF} DCOM got error "1084" attempting to start the service WSearch with arguments "" in order to run the server: {9E175B6D-F52A-11D8-B9A5-505054503030} [[two errors with different alfa-numeric strings]] The Computer Browser service depends on the Server service which failed to start because of the following error: The dependency service or group failed to start. Other errors that may be relevent from earlier today include: The server {1F87137D-0E7C-44D5-8C73-4EFFB68962F2} did not register with DCOM within the required timeout. Module Path: C:\Windows\System32\bcmihvsrv64.dll Error Code: 21 I suspect many of these are simply related to starting in Safe Mode, but hopefully there is some hint in there that will lead to a diagnosis. Thanks. |

| was it the same issue in safe mode is this error AVGIDSHA occurring in normal mode ? appears to be quite a common issue with AVG - searching google try running the removal tool again, for norton, i know it often has to be run, then a reboot and then run again followed by another reboot

| The AVGIDSHA error occures in both safe mode (in a list of other drivers) and normal mode (by itself). I've run the AVG removal tool a frew times with no change. I assume the driver failed to load because it has been removed, but not sure why it would still be trying to load it in the first place. |

| I'm not sure if it will help with a diagnosis or not, but I can duplicate the problem in Internet Explorer. Currently IE is the only program that is able to access the internet. I can download installation files to my hard drive and run them to install new software, but programs like Thunderbird and Avast can't make a network connection to get updates. I usually have unfettered access with IE (I haven't found any sites I can't reach). If I use IE to try to install Google Chrome, the installation starts, but fails when it can't make a network connection. The error message includes a web link to get help with the problem. If I click on that link a new instance of IE starts, reports that it can't display the page and suggests running the Windows Network Diagnostics troubleshooter - which can't identify the problem. But... if I copy the link that failed in the second IE back into the first, it opens the google help page with no problems. |

| Thanks, I'll read that section. I have already run 6 different malware programs in safe mode without finding anything onther some tracking cookies. These included Microsoft Malicious Software Removal Tool, RogueKiller, FixExec, TDSSKiller, Malwarebytes, and HitmanPro. I also ran sfc /scannow with no errors reported. |

| Hy there and sorry for the delay. We all are a little bit busy. Do I understand it correct, that you dont have any problems to connect to the internet with your Browser ? Let me have a deeper look in your system. Please download Farbar's Service Scanner and run it on the computer with the issue.

| Thank you, Yes, I can access the internet using internet explorer, but not Chrome. Other services (software updaters, online software registration, software installers that use the web, etc.) are not able to connect. Avast is working, but gives a warning "not able to protect mail/news (error 10044). Please check that AvastSvc.exe is not blocked by your firewall". It is allowed in windows firewall, but is still unable to connect. I also have one program (Quickbooks accounting) that can't open a file on the local hard drive because it "cannot get the network address of the server". Other than that, everything else seems to be working. | Hy and sorry for the delay. I had no chance to come online yesterday. Could you explain me, how your PC connect to the internet. Do you have a chance to try a WLAN connection using a smartphone or tablet PC as a Mobile Hotspot ? If yes, please try it an let me know if the internet works with that. Download OTL to your Desktop.
Code: activex netsvcs msconfig %SYSTEMDRIVE%\*. %PROGRAMFILES%\*.exe %LOCALAPPDATA%\*.exe %systemroot%\*. /mp /s %windir%\installer\*. /5 %localappdata%\*. /5 /md5start services.exe user32.dll /md5stop CREATERESTOREPOINT
Please post both logfiles in your next reply. |

| Thank you, I am away for a few days, but will try this when I get back. I think I've determined that something is filtering DNS requests. If I type in the numeric web address for known site in Chrome or Firefox, the error message uses the www.---- text address - so it is getting to the site, getting the text address, but then never sending any request to the text address. I have also discovered that the 64 bit version of Internet Explorer works, but the 32 bit version doesn't just like the other web brousers. Hopefully those clues will help. Thanks again |
