Can't reconfigure my computer.
I am using a Compaq computer and on their knowledge center, there is a place that you can reconfigure your computer to an earlier time. For some reason, the last few times I tried to do this, it tells me that it was unsuccessful. I use this often since it seems that I tend to screw this thing up and would really like to know why it won't work anymore.

I am using Windows ME and my computer has been freezing up and there really is no specific problem right now but I'm sure that sooner or later, there will be.

Go to the site i posted a link at the bottom of this post,,download and run the startup list program and paste the generated text back here in a post so we can look at it. If your restoring to previous dates and its not working there has to be a reason, maybe this way we can spot it.

Things I would do to improve the system.

1, goto start run type in Msconfig and uncheck alot of programs you know your not using.

2, Grab the Free Ram program in my sig, this will help alot.

3, double click My Computer > and right click on the C Drive and goto properties and then tools and do a scandisk and a defrag of your drive. If you have a screeen saver on, you might what to stop it for it will aid in scandisk and a defrag.

4, Make sure I have my system updated www.windowsupdates.com cause restoring it to another date you will lose the updates you did already.

5, run also a program like pestpatral to see what lurking in the computer that I wasn't aware of and get rid of them

6, If all else fails, get a new computer or build me self one

Won't that give out info on everything that's on my computer? Personal stuff? I mean if I copy and paste all that stuff on here that is. Also, with all the technical terms for the programs, how do I know if I am using them or not and if I can delete them? Maybe I just need someone to come in who knows what they are doing? LOL.

Are you talking about windowsupdates? No it will not.

You have to say yes that you trust and let it see what your missing so it will post the right patches and updates. If it wasn't Microsoft I wouldn't posted it for you. I will never post anything on this forum to hurt anyones Pc or to the effect, I don't want it done to me.

Hey I live in Pa also.

I think singofam is worried about the startuplist posting.
The only information that bandit was suggesting you post is NOT personal. It merely lists all the obvious, and not so obvious programs and processes that you computer is currently starting and running every time you use it. The purpose of this is to identify viruses/trojans/spyware, that DO report back to their owners on personal information in your computer, and cause all sorts of other problems besides. A view of the startup list is a normal diagnostic tool, and can enable a more knowlegeable person, (Not me) to suggest the removal of unwanted and dangerous programs and processes. No Personal information is involved.

Below are links to a threads with a startup lists,,A virus was spotted,, a dialer was spotted,, registry problems were also. Its the only way we can see whats running on your computer..whether you are using the software or not if its in your startup its running,,if its running its using resources..If its spyware it may be locking up due to the reporting back of your information, which really may not be a lockup but you can't use it. Most of the time we have been able to guide people through it, I remember a few who had never run a program like the startup list which you obviously already have. If it turns out to be somthing really serious we'll let you know.

Here it is. Hope this helps, seems like a foreign language to me. I did run a spyware seeking program (trial period type) and that found around 208 things that said should be removed but the program wouldn't let me remove them unless I bought it. Maybe I should buy one? If so, can anyone suggest a good one to get or somewhere I can just download one?

Thanks for everyone trying to help! You guys seem to have a lot of patience for semi-computer illiterate people like myself!

First follow the instructions from the link I posted below and remove the virus "choke.exe". Then go to the control panel and uninstall savenow and bonzibuddy if its there, its spyware. If you would like to read about them let me know and I'll send you a link or two. Also if there is one single thing you are in doubt of just explain what it is and I or someone else will break it down for you.

Before spybot this was bad news "OSSProxy = C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\OSSPROXY.EXE "(marketscore)
I know now that spybot targets this spyware,,lets hope it works well.

Last some of your programs that have been downloaded with spyware will stop working,,if you post what those are when you finish we will see if we can find one that is spyware free.

Go to the site at the bottom of this post and then download and run Spybot S&D then see if that takes care of it..Let us know.

Here is a link to a tutorial that appears to be an excellent guide.. I strongly suggest you read it through. http://www.net-integration.net/reviews/spybot1.html

Be sure that after you download the program,, open it and click settings in the left hand pane,, then click filesets in the left hand pane,,be sure that system internals and usage tracks are unchecked. When you run the program only remove the items in red.

Also in the lefthand pane is a button named online,, if you select that button a window will open and you can get the latest updates so nothing is missed.

After you finish doing all this post back and let us know because there is still more there, but I wanted to leave the last for others to have the oppurtunity to look at your startup. Its also a subject that I have very little experience in. (bho's)

I fully removed the choke.exe a long time ago. But to make sure, I went to the link that bandit gave me and did what it said, did a search for it and it wasn't found on my computer. I know it was in the start up list. It was however checked on the start up list so I unchecked it. Can't figure out why it was still there but a search on my computer couldn't find it. I just removed SaveNow. I removed BonziBuddy a long time ago. He was cute at first but got on my nerves quickly. (My children use the computer and download some stuff but I have put a stop to that.)

I have noticed that Ossproxy is always causing errors on my computer. I wasn't sure before what it was though. I downloaded the Spybot S&D. Had 188 problems on that, got that taken care of. Two things couldn't be fixed but said that it could be at my next start up. Thanks a lot for everyone's help. I am open to any and all ideas. I'd like to free up some more space on my computer because I have a CD burner I want to install and hate taking up so much space on my computer. I think I need to get a separate one for my kids' games.

Wow, I just checked how much free space I have and it's way more than I've had in a long time!!! Much thanks guys!
