Solved: Can't get rid of Vx2 Transponder!!!
Hello. This is my first posting on a forum so please excuse any ignorance on my part. I am currently running Windows ME (I know, I know) and I want to completely clean my pc of spyware, etc. before upgrading to Windows XP. For the past few months, I have been struggling with spyware, malware, etc. I have been highly successful in removing most of these threats with programs like Ad-aware, Spybot S&D, and HijackThis. However, the one threat that I have been unable to remove in all this time (that I’m aware of) is the Vx2 Transponder. I know which registry key it is ({00320615-B6C2-40A6-8F99-F1C52D674FAD}), but every time I remove it (manually or with HijackThis) it returns on normal boot. Obviously, there is some reloader file at work but I have no idea where it is or what it would even look like. Also, I think I should point out that I believe that this is some ‘newer’ variant of the Transponder. I have done countless google searches and gotten some seemingly good advice on its removal; however, the info does not seem to apply to MY variant (i.e.; was advised to look in the Run folder of the registry for a ‘conscorr’ entry which I was told is the reloader Stub and for a ‘conscorr.exe’ file in the Windows folder. However, I could not find either entry even with ‘show hidden files’ turned on).

I have noticed a few other peculiarities: I purchased a cheap (to say the least) stand-alone program called Ashampoo Popup Killer a few months back when I first started having problems and was completely ignorant about spyware programs. Whenever I delete this reg. key ({49E0E0F0-5C30-11D4-945D-000000000003}), it too returns on normal reboot. I have since researched the product and supposedly it is from a ‘reputable’ source; however, I highly doubt that any program which cannot be removed at the user’s discretion should be considered harmless.

Also, I tried to delete another reg. key for which I have been unable to figure out its purpose. I used HijackThis, but as soon as I clicked ‘OK’, the computer restarted again. When I ran another HijackThis scan, the reg. key was back. (O16 - DPF: {B9191F79-5613-4C76-AA2A-398534BB8999} -). There is no name associated with this key.

Problems that seem to be associated with Vx2 Transponder: when connected to the internet, computer restarts for no apparent reason – even when no one is at the keyboard; computer restarts in the middle of a complete anti-virus scan (using AVG anti-virus version 7.0 which I update frequently); computer freezes while connected to the internet if Ctrl + Alt + Delete pressed (sometimes); desktop clears and Explorer no longer displays in task manager whenever I try to open the recycle bin, windows explorer, my documents folder, etc. I have to reboot into safe mode to explore computer files, run an anti-virus scan (which comes up free of viruses), or even to unzip files.

I’ve also noticed that whenever I connect to the internet, an unknown program that does not show up in task manager will disable my firewall (BlackICE) for a moment or two and then starts it back up (presumably to connect to some server).

Here is my HijackThis log:

Hi, I am not able to assist with the VX2 problem, help for that should be coming soon....

Some help for the two Registry entries:
O16 - DPF: {B9191F79-5613-4C76-AA2A-398534BB8999} (YAddBook Class) - http://download.yahoo.com/dl/installs/yab_af.cab

That should belong to yahoo address book. If the Downloaded Program File folder shows this DPF, you should be able to delete it from there. Fix the entry with Hijackthis, restart.

For the Ashampoo Popup Killer::
The 49E0E0F0 etc key is part of Ashampoo Popup Killer,
however it is listed as Ashampoo WinOptimizer, is there any entry for that in Add/Remove Programs?

NEXT: open regedit and hit the Edit button, then Find...type in Ashampoo WinOptimizer , and then delete the value over on the right side that it points to...then, hit Find Next, delete that right hand value, and so on, until you get the finished searching Registry message. You can fix the item with Hijackthis, but it should not be there, if it is, fix and restart.

The filename associated with that specific key is popup.dll.
_________________-
The VX2 takes a bit more work> only a few people are working on this, so be patient and they will get to your thread soon!

I assume you have been fixing the entry below with Hijackthis ?:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00320615-B6C2-40A6-8F99-F1C52D674FAD} - (no file)

When it comes time to work on it, you cannot restart during the process, as it will change names> it looks like it already may have, and I don't see any of the typical entries in your last log, if you have things turned off using msconfig, they may not show in your logs....wait though and see what experts advise, and try not to restart the computer.

There are some tools the experts use to expose the guardian file in these VX2 hijacks, and then some tricky little steps involving a Reg file that they post for you to run...I am sure when they are around possibly later on today you will get some help with that hijack.

Hi, OK a simpler explanation for you:

I do not see the typical VX2 entries in either of your logs...
That may be because you have been trying to delete or fix them with Hijackthis, or by deleting them manually from the Registry or Windows...

If as you posted that CLSID line

({00320615-B6C2-40A6-8F99-F1C52D674FAD}),

is a VX2 item, it should have other entries that show it---however, in your log "(no file") appears next to it's Hijackthis line...so perhaps it is a stranded Registry key, even so, as you say, it should be able to be deleted and it does appear that something else is keeping it there...

The guardian file is probably what does this....can you download and run and save a log from this:

Download the VX2Finder.exe tool. Click on the VX2Finder.exe and then click on the "Click to Find VX2.Betterinternet" button. It will display the files, the Guardian Key and User Agent string. Now click the Make Log button. It will open the log in notepad. Copy and paste that log here and wait for further instructions.

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/VX2Finder.exe

The help needed will not come from me> an expert will be able to shortly...

Also, you may have to turn of TeaTimer for the fix- just be prepared to> the setting is found when you are using the Advanced mode (at the top of the SpyBot main screen under "Mode" select "Advanced" then..., and then, "Tools" and you will see the checkbox for TeaTimer...as I say, leave it for now, just showing you where it was in case you are asked to disable it.

Hi,
When I try to run Vx2Finder.exe, I get a message stating that Vx2Finder is only for NT based systems. Any other similar Vx2 finders you know of?

Hi, I guess that means you do not have any VX2 problems.

Disable TeaTimer during the fix, you can then enable it after all is done:

Update AdAware SE personal edition and SpyBot Search and Destroy and scan.

Fix with Hijackthis:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {49E0E0F0-5C30-11D4-945D-000000000003} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00320615-B6C2-40A6-8F99-F1C52D674FAD} - (no file)

And if you have uninstalled the Yahoo address book, fix this:

O16 - DPF: {B9191F79-5613-4C76-AA2A-398534BB8999} -

When you have them all checked off, click "Fix checked" and restart.

Check the new log for those entries, or post it if you have them and want further help...

If you see at any time entries that look like these in HJT logs, it would be the new variant of VX2:

O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 auto.search.msn.com
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 search.netscape.com
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch
O1 - Hosts: 69.20.16.183 ieautosearch

Hope that helps!

hi, If you have any items that are not checked when you look at the Startup tab under msconfig, kindly put checks back in them, restart, and post a new log from HJT.
We can't see what is not running...

I think you still need to turn off Tea Timer, it prevents changes...you need to make changes, so it may be stopping you from doing what you need to do> READ this about it:

AND> you need to un-check it in msconfig, don't turn it back on until your problem is gone- it should be the only item that is NOT checked in msconfig Startup list.

http://forums.net-integration.net/in...0&#entry117999

The new DPF "no-file" is just this:

O16 - DPF: {30528230-99F7-4BB4-88D8-FA1D4F56A2AB} (YInstStarter Class) - http://download.yahoo.com/dl/installs/yinst0401.cab

I asked you before, did you uninstall anything yourself to do with Yahoo- any messenger, toolbar from Yahoo?

You may need to reinstall it if you are using or want to use those things. If you have uninstalled any Yahoo items, then fix the items below with Hijackthis:

O16 - DPF: {30528230-99F7-4BB4-88D8-FA1D4F56A2AB} -
O16 - DPF: {B9191F79-5613-4C76-AA2A-398534BB8999} -

If Tea Timer is running, it will pop up and ask if you want to allow changes...and you may answer the wrong thing...I advise just turning it off, completely, for now so we can finish fixing what you need to. The downloaded program files with the - sign are probably missing> when you look at that Downloaded Program Files folder in Windows Explorer, do you see that string or the other? (Right click on any, select Properties, then you can look through the Company, Version etc info to see who they are from)
