Hi Flrman1! I'm still here and expect to begin the KAV5 procedure soon. I've been sidetracked in that effort for the last few days. With your indulgence, I'd like to fill you in, and ask for help on a side problem. A few days ago I went to the www.kaspersky.com to download the KAV5 and since it was suggested that I use the closest download site ( there are 10 sites listed ) I chose the one that said "United States". It turns out that this is a FTP site. To tell the truth, before now I didn't know about FTP sites as opposed to HTTP sites. I had never had occasion to get files from and FTP site. Anyway, I clicked on the link and nothing happened except the little flag at the top-right of the screen started waving. I tried this a number of times thinking that perhaps the site was temporarily down. Later tries resulted in the brouser becoming unresponsive and the stop button didn't work. I tried downloading ftp://ftp.microsoft.com but the same thing happened. After becoming aware of the FTP/HTTP thing with some help from a responder in another forum I notice that about half of the KAV download sites are HTTP all of which were in the Russian Federation, so I successfully downloaded the KAV5 installer from there and will start installing and setting it up soon.

Now if I may, let me continue on the FTP problem. It's not that I have to have it, since I've never needed it before, but it bothers me to have a feature not working, and especially not to know why! I looked around on Google a little and at Microsoft Support. One reference said to put a check by "Enable folder view for FTP sites" in Internet Options/Advanced tab. I already have a check. Another said to put a check by "Use Passive FTP" in the same list. I already have that too. Microsoft Support had an article:

which says XP has a problem in regard to downloading FTP files, but I disproved that as follows. My wife has a computer across the hall which is on the home network with my computer. It readily downloaded the KAV FTP sites as well as ftp://ftp.microsoft.com. It has the exact same version of
XP and IE as I have, and I believe all the updates have been downloaded automatically to both computers. Her Internet security settings are the same as mine. She has the McAfee virus scan as I do. I have the McAfee Privacy service but she doesn't although I've tried disabling it. She doesn't have SpywareBlaster or SpyBot. Do you have any thoughts on this, Flrman1? I'm frustrated! Hi Flrman1, I'm still here, and hope you're still there.

I have run the KAV scan. It was a harrowing experience. Ran into a couple of difficulties, and last night I thought my computer was out of business for the duration. But now things look rosy. I'm attaching the KAV report. Hope it means something to you. I ran HijackThis and see that our old "isrvs" friends are still there. I attach this also.

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close ALL windows except HijackThis and click "Fix checked"

Restart to safe mode.

How to start your computer in safe mode

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default, Go to Start > Search and under "More advanced search options".
Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

Next click on My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Now find and delete this folder if it is still there:

C:\WINDOWS\isrvs

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Go to Start > Run and type %temp% in the Run box. The Temp folder will open. Click Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Click on the Programs tab then click the "Reset Web Settings" button. Click Apply then OK.


Empty the Recycle Bin


Check to see if Windows Update works.

Also go to Internet Options and click on the Security tab. Check all the functions there in each of the Zones and see if everything is as it should be.

Thanks AcaCandy for the reply. This whole thread has been an excellent learning experience for me and I am indebted to Flrman1 for his excellent and expert tutelage in guiding me through "rehabilitating" my computer. My computer is working fine, and the only remaining thing before I declare the thread solved, is that I had hoped to get an evaluation by Flrman1 of the results of the KAV scan, and to find out what he thinks about the remaining "isrvs" lines in the HijackThis log I sent after the scan; e.g., can I now attempt to just remove them again since it is possible that they wont now reinstall themselves after the KAV. Thanks again to Flrman1 and everyone else in the Forum for the help. Addnovice.

The log looks good except for Weatherbug. It is adware and I'd get rid of it if I were you. Check this out for info on Weatherbug and make your own decision:

Here are two adware free alternatives:

http://www.singerscreations.com/

Weatherbug can easily be removed via Add/Remove programs.


Also check to make sure Windows Update is working and check in Internet Options > Security and make sure everything is as it should be there. Are any options missing or grayed out?

Thanks ever so much Flrman1. I will probably get rid of Weatherbug as you recommend. Thanks for the alternatives you gave.

You're Welcome!

Now turn off System Restore:

On the Desktop, right-click My Computer.
Click Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply, and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a restore point:

Single-click Start and point to All Programs.
Mouse over Accessories, then System Tools, and select System Restore.
In the System Restore wizard, select the box next the text labeled "Create a restore point" and click the Next button.
Type a description for your new restore point. Something like "After trojan/spyware cleanup". Click Create and you're done.

Check this out for info on how to tighten your security settings and some good free tools to help prevent this from happening again.
