hey everyone, i've been having the same problems with this snooty bug for a week now and im quite fed up with it. like most everyone else, i've been able to get rid of the "req" files, but my remaining problem is this bugger:

I'm about to try some of the fixes that people have mentioned, but I don't want to destroy my registery, so itd be great if some of the people that have fixed it could let me know about how their registry looks right now.

and like tbroka said, where did this one come from? i like to think i run a secure browsing experience, and the only things i downloaded last week from Google.com (keyhole and picasa 2). naturally, im befuddled about how this thing got on to my system.

one more thing, i was (obviously) using IE when this problem began. i subsequently manuevered around the problem and downloaded firefox. i havent seen any apparent trouble this past week, but i was wondering if anyone knew whether this problem affects firefox as well? the symantec website mentions that it is an adware problem, but it seems to be a bit more dangerous than that. is there a general effect on my computer as well? and if so, is my machine still usable (or even reliable)?

As for the vundo trojan / Virtumonde Adware entries, the only known way to fix it at the moment is to identify all the bad files and then delete them via the Recovery Console (as detailed on the previous pages in this thread).

The least you can do for now is to disable the BHO via:
Internet Explorer > Tools > Manage Add-Ons


Alas, the Symantec Removal Tools were last updated on 25th Nov 2004 and 4th Feb 2005 respectively, so don't yet contain detection/removal for this new variant, and I'm not sure if they ever will/can:

When I finally found these files this morning, I was reading up on the files on the symantec website, and like you said, it's not very helpful on this variant. does symantec have an understood time schedule for these problems (detection -> solution)?

It is extremely unlikely to be a fix for these available from any antivirus company

the way that they attach to the winlogon command in XP/W2K means that you need to boot to dos without any part of windows loaded to be able to fix them

they might issue a cleaning tool that will run in dos mode that will find and delete all the infected files but you will still need to boot to dos using the RC in XP/W2K to use it

And yes I know XP hasn't actually got DOS but it has a M$ quasi dos system taht works in these cases

I have also had success removing the MSevents BHO pest by using the Recovery Console (RC). I needed to install and found instructions in another forum - go to http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-10590_11-5657217.html

In my case, I ran the installation from my C:\ drive. After a couple of warnings about missing files, RC was downloaded automatically from Microsoft and installed.

After reboot, I was then able to go to the folder where the virus was located and delete it, along with 3 other hidden files, after un-hiding them with the "attrib -h" command. In my case the files were:

c:\windows\system32\export\avajbew.ini (= webjava in reverse!)
c:\windows\system32\export\avajbew.bak2
c:\windows\system32\export\avajbew.bak1

i was just checking out the tech republic website on the installation intstructions for the RC ( http://techrepublic.com.com/5100-10590_11-5657217.html# ). it mentions as a note in there that i cant use the XP installation disk if I have upgraded to SP2 (which I have). The installation disk that i have came packaged with my Dell (obviously w/o SP2). Is it absolutely necessary that I install the RC, or can I just run it from the install disk? Or should i uninstall SP2 from Add/Remove programs and then try my install disk that way?

Hi folks. I've been having a conversation with myself over at http://forums.techguy.org/t354343.html on this same topic.

After ridding myself of req.dat (killbox.exe) I only had two rogue files associated with this nasty little bug:

c:\windows\inf\odbcdos.dll
c:\!Submit\odbcdos.dll (hidden directory)

The first file was easily removed under the Recovery Console, but under Administrator privileges I was UNABLE to remove the second file (Access Denied). Renaming or changing attributes didn't work, either, but I could "see" it with a simple DIR command.

I had a Eureka! moment and booted under Safe Mode with the command prompt option. The dos window with the prompt pops up before windows fully boots, and from there I was able to remove both the file and directory: c:\!Submit\odbcdos.dll

FYI, the C:\!Submit folder is created by Killbox, and is where it stores backups of all deleted files, incase you need to submit them to AV/security sites etc, or if you accidentally delete a legit required file.

I had it for a week, thanks to all above !!
Removal worked for me using Recovery Consol:
- Deleted all files (especially the .dll & the .ini's) identified in the path by HJT for the BHO for MSEvents. (Also identified by MS AntiSpyware!)
- Deleted the self-re-running entries from Registry using:
- REGEDIT: remove references per the Sophos Advanced description; used the Edit/Find on the 'B...' key you listed for MSEvents.
- in MS AntiSpyware, permamently deleted the BHO to MSEVENTS found in the Tools|Advanced_Tools|System_Explorers in: Internet Explorer -IE BHOs

Don't know how else to do it w/o Recovery Consol, or buying the tool from Sophos or other. Symantec appear to have nothing so far.

Hey everyone, I seem to have gotten rid of the file using the Recovery console as well, and then cleaned it up using HJT. I'm about to run Symantec again (it was the program that detected those files in the first place) just to make sure im not missing anything. I wanted to add the results of my Norton scan. I only got one infected file:

When I first installed HJT (specifically to resolve this issue of the vundo trojan) i created a back up just in case i did anything stupid. I assume this .dll file is the backup of the infected one. I'm not quite sure if its malicious in the HJT backup folder, but Symantec couldnt clean it up. I killbox-ed the file and it caused no problems.

Let's hope thats the last i see of this mess.

Yes HJT makes backups in case of mistakes

Norton or other antiviruses cannot delete anything from that folder as it is only available to HJT to use so the correct and easiest way to remove them is open HJT press config/ backups and either select the ones you want to remove or press remove all

Has anyone been able to confirm that the .dll can be removed via "safe mode with prompt"? I did it via Recovery Console, but needed the former to remove the killbox folder/file c:\!Submit\%filename%

Second:
