The dll#s cannot be removed from safe mode command prompt

you need to boot to the recovery console where windows is not loaded at all

There are probably about 400 or different file names as they are almost random and frequently there is a backup with the original filename in reverse

Just to clarify/expand, although I think I've already mentioned this earlier in the thread...

The random filename is made up of two of the following 77 combinations of letters listed here:

I make that 5852 possible connotations (77x76)
Though I was never really any good at math....

That was the old version of vundo

this new version is much worse than the older ones, and they were amongst the hardest to fix

but the naming convention has seemed to stay the same

Pardon my intrusion but this fix seems to work on this infection:

Signs of infection:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {1C044AAD-7955-4cbd-8175-501A165C4E5D} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dat
O2 - BHO: MSEvents Object - {B8B55274-0F9A-41E5-9067-A3539BD9E860} - C:\WINDOWS\Web\nutfont.dll <-------- Random.
O20 - Winlogon Notify: nutfont - C:\WINDOWS\Web\nutfont.dll <-------- Random.
O20 - Winlogon Notify: req - C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dat

Please download Process Explorer by Sysinternals from here:

http://www.sysinternals.com/files/procexpnt.zip

Also download KillBox by Option^Explicit from here:

http://www.downloads.subratam.org/KillBox.zip

Reboot into safe mode.

Unzip Process Explorer and double click on procexp.exe

In the top section of the Process Exlporer screen double click on winlogon.exe to bring up the winlogon.exe properties screen. Click on the Threads tab at the top.

Once you see this screen click on each instance of Random.dll once and then click the kill button.

After you have killed all of the Random.dll's under winlogon click ok.

Next double click on explorer.exe and again click once on each instance of Random.dll then click the kill button. Once you have done that click ok again.

Restart HijackThis and put checks next to the following, close all browser windows (including this one) then click on 'Fix Checked':

Whatever

Copy the bold text below to notepad.
Save it as fix.reg to your desktop.
Ensure the "Save as" type is set to "all files"

Once you have saved it double click it and allow it to merge with the registry.

Now open Killbox.

Choose Tools > Delete Temp Files and click OK.
Copy & paste the following line in bold into the "Full Path of File To Delete" box:

C:\WINDOWS\Web\Random.dll

Select the "Delete on Reboot" When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, press the NO button.

Run Killbox program again. In the field labeled "Full Path of File to Delete "enter:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\req.dat

Select the "Delete on Reboot" When it asks if you would like to Reboot now, press the YES button.

Allow the machine to reboot then post a new HijackThis log.

Works like a charm.

Note, when copying/creating the .reg file, be sure to remove the erroneous space here:
MSEvents.MSEve nts.1 = wrong
MSEvents.MSEvents.1 = correct

Alas, that's a forum bug, where it puts random spaces in reg keys.

Or just unzip and use the pre-prepared .reg file from my attachment here.

Yes, it merges with the registry.
Or to be more precise, it removes those 3 reg keys that are associated with the trojan.

Sorry to dump a cold shower on anybody but that was the first way that was tried as it is the way we dealt with the previous version of this pest

However this one attaches to winlogon in a different way and it can't be killed by processexplorer
it attaches to 3 or 4 subprocesses of winlogon & they all need to be stopped at exactly the same time otherwise it recreates itself and that just cannot be done

If it does work for anybody I am very happy but be prepared to use the RC & delete the files as I really don't think it will

It looks like it worked. I am very suprised and happy, but I will give it a few hours and see if he posts to say whether it comes back again before I start to recommend that route, knowing how tricky these can be to remove
