Unhappy Weird Computer Behavior
Hi, All ~ One of my coworkers is having odd problems and I wondered if they sounded like any Trojan horses or other viruses out there. Every morning when she comes in, she finds that her printer is disabled -- she gets the "error in print job" message, so she has to re-acquaint her printer with her computer every day. Someone installed Ad-Aware and Spy Sweeper. Every time she tries to use Spy Sweeper is freezes as soon as it has quarantined what it found.

Does any of that sound familiar? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You have no active AV

Run ActiveScan online virus scan

http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

When the scan is finished, anything that it cannot clean have it delete it. Make a note of the file location of anything that cannot be deleted so you can delete it yourself.
- Save the results from the scan!

Then get AVG 7 - http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/

Add remove programs - Mywebsearch

Get this - MS AntiSpy - http://download.microsoft.com/downlo...areInstall.exe (XP and W2K only)

Post a new HiJackThis log along with the results from ActiveScan

Hi, again. Things are getting much worse, real fast. My coworker asked me to run SpySweep for her before I found your last answer. I did, and after finding 67 items of adware, cookies and trojan horses, the program froze. I did ctrl-alt-del to unfreeze it, logged on here and saw your msg. I tried to download the pandasoftware you sent me to and it kept getting blocked. I also noticed that although I had minimized this site, it disappeared. When i type the url into the address bar at top, I get the "Done" msg. at the bottom left of the screen, but I'm still on the Dell start page. I'm on my computer, now and everything's fine - but a second one of the computers on this network is now refusing to print -- that was the first symptom.

Okay. I booted up in safe mode, and used HJT to remove the list you gave me. But I don't know what Windows Explorer is. I Searched it and found a shortcut, did Tools, Folder, Optios, View and changed the settings as you said -- and them realized that I was in My Documents. I closed it, went to the toolbar at the top of the Search box, went to change the settings, found them already changed and searched for C:/WINDOWS/System32/fookczc.exe and it was not found. I'm running SpySweep now and will let you know what happens, but I have to clock out in 45 min utes, so I have the feeling I'll still be wrestling with this tomorrow ...

Hi, Again -- Here's my second Logfile and what's going on now. I booted in safe mode and re-checked HJT -- at first I could not get back to the merjin site to download HJT again (it kept disappearing) -- and nothing bad has come back.

I found Windows Explorer and followed instructions. I found & deleted C:/PROGRA~1/BUTTER/1 but could not find C:/WINDOWS/System32/fookczc.exe. I even looked in the System 32 folder I did find, but it's not there.

I did not find MyWebSearch, though I did find the shortcut. Tried to remove the file in Add & Remove Programs, but it's not listed and no matter where I go and change the "hidden files and folders" thing, when I do any kind of Search, it says I am not searching hidden files.

I skipped ahead to START - RUN -TYPE %temp% OK, etc. and did not find the C:Windows/Temp or C:/WINNT/temp files. I re-booted in safe mode and still cannot download active scan. Thanks!

Hi, Again -- thanks so much for your patience and help! We're at a really busy call center and I have almost no downtime to get these computers cleaned out. I still haven't completely fixed the first one we started -- and now mine is infected. I ran HJT and will follow the same steps you gave me last time, and then send a new HJT log, because I think there are a few new things on there. I will aslo try to download AVG, but I don't think I can. I wish we could do this in realtime, like with instant messaging, because there are nine computers on this network and I think they are all infected. Thanks so much!!

Okay, here's the HJK logfile I ran after following the first set of instructions you gave me to do in safe mode. Before I did any of that, I ran AVG 7 and it told me I had no infections, even though the HJT log showed them and I had not removed them yet ... Thanks again!
