| And the worst of it is, it's all my fault. But, though I surely deserve what I'm getting for my stupidity, I'd still like to remove it and fix the damage it's caused... Anyway, I don't know much about this virus, and I'm not exatly sure what all it's done, but I'll tell what happened and hope someone else has an idea. :P It was in an AIM profile. That is, it was linked to in an AIM profile, with a devious "pics from my trip" title. Which was unfortunate for me, because this profile happened to belong to a pretty girl who actually had just gone on a trip... The "it" in question was an .exe (pics.exe), which should've warned me, but it claimed to be a slideshow and I foolishly trusted it. I downloaded and ran it; nothing much obvious happened. Maybe an hourglass by my mous for a second, but that's about it. It was about then that I began to realize how stupid I'd been... I looked at the rest of the profile: "www.g00ns.com is the best site ever!" or something like that. Oh dear; I've seen that site mentioned before. I asked her about it, and nope - she had no idea that that was in her profile. I immediately ran to delete it - no luck, it won't let me. I found a "pics.exe" process running and ended it, scanned with Norton (which found nothing), then went into Safe Mode (with networking, if that makes any difference). In Safe Mode, I deleted it, then searched for "pics" and found and deleted another file entitled "PICS-[number]". It was a "PF" file. I think it was most likely the preview of it that Firefox downloaded, or something like that, but I don't know. I'm not sure how relevant that is, but just in case... anyway, I then ran Adaware (still in Safe Mode), Crap Cleaner, and Panda Activescan (which I went to with Internet Explorer, which was working at this point. It stopped later). Adaware found nothing but tracking cookies, Panda nothing at all, and Crap Cleaner didn't appear to help either. I hoped this had been enough anyway, and restarted into normal mode. (I have XP Professional, SP1.) Well... the virus or whatever it was apparently had either done its damage, or was still lurking. My computer ran incredibly slowly, unusably so. I tried restarting and doing "Last Known Good Configuration", but it just sent me back to the menu after failing to load Windows. I had no choice, it seemed; had to use Safe Mode, apparently. I went back into Safe Mode and ran Kasparsky Antivirus (which found nothing but quarantined Norton files), then tried to get on AIM to contact a friend of mine who knows a bit more about computers than I. No luck; AIM wouldn't work. It starts up, freezes for a sec, then totally closes. I tried IE to use the TrendMicro online scan, and found that now IE won't work - it is really slow, then crashes within 15 or so seconds. I'd been using MSN all of this time, but suddenly it crashed as well. "Search" doesn't work anymore, either. That's about all there is to tell. Firefox and Windows Messenger still appear to be working, and I'm running in Safe Mode with Networking. Something that may be relevant: Another friend suggested I look at "hkey_local_machine\software\microsoft\windows\current version\run" in my registry; I did, and a couple entries look suspicious to me. http://tinyurl.com/aps7k <-- Screenshot. The zod32.exe one, which is highlighted in that shot, is the one I'm most suspicious of. Can't recall seeing it before, and it was a process running when I restarted my machine into Normal Mode. I don't know what LVCOMPSX or TkBellExe are, either, though I think the rest are OK. Anything with Logitech should be from my webcam, Symantec from Norton. I know, it was incredibly dumb of me to open that exe in the first place. I'm usually pretty good about not being a total technological failure, but this time... oh well. Any help would be appreciated; as it is, I'm going to have to completely wipe it all.

| Hi Xrot - I suggest you get a copy of HiJackThis, which is a program that investigates your registry and will give information that experts can look at to identify problems. You say that IE crashes within 15 seconds or so. That may be enough time to download HJT - if not, can you use another computer or ask a friend to download it? Then copy it to a floppy or CD and move it to your computer. Please follow the instructions below - I've given the full address of a download site, in case you have to use another computer. First, create a new folder on your hard drive - (ie C:/HJT or C:/Program Files/HJT). Download HiJackThis from here - http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3155. It's a zip folder so you'll then have to open that and extract the contents into the new folder you've created (it mustn't run from the zip folder). Open the new HJT folder and click or double-click on hijackthis.exe to open the program. Click on the 'Scan and save log file' button. When the scan is finished it will ask you to save the log - click 'Save' and the log will open in notepad. Click on 'Edit/Select All' then 'Edit/Copy'. Then paste the log into a new post and wait for expert help. DO NOT allow HJT to 'fix' anything - many of the items in the log are safe and necessary for your computer to work. |

| Alright, downloaded and scanned. I did this in Safe Mode, though - just realized that that may not be as helpful, if at all. Hmm... I'll try starting normally, saving the log, then going back into Safe Mode with Networking to post. But just in case, here's the Safe Mode log (next post has normal one): Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 11:28:50 AM, on 8/29/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP1 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP1 (6.00.2800.1106) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe C:\Documents and Settings\HJT\hijackthis\HijackThis.exe R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyServer = 219.93.180.98:80 R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings,ProxyOverride = localhost O2 - BHO: AcroIEHlprObj Class - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 6.0\Reader\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll O2 - BHO: (no name) - {53707962-6F74-2D53-2644-206D7942484F} - C:\PROGRA~1\SPYBOT~1\SDHelper.dll O2 - BHO: (no name) - {AA58ED58-01DD-4d91-8333-CF10577473F7} - (no file) O2 - BHO: NAV Helper - {BDF3E430-B101-42AD-A544-FADC6B084872} - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll O3 - Toolbar: Norton AntiVirus - {42CDD1BF-3FFB-4238-8AD1-7859DF00B1D6} - C:\Program Files\Norton AntiVirus\NavShExt.dll O3 - Toolbar: &Radio - {8E718888-423F-11D2-876E-00A0C9082467} - C:\WINDOWS\System32\msdxm.ocx O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ccApp] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ccRegVfy] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccRegVfy.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MMTray] C:\Program Files\MUSICMATCH\MUSICMATCH Jukebox\mm_tray.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Symantec NetDriver Monitor] C:\PROGRA~1\SYMNET~1\SNDMon.exe /Consumer O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [KernelFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -k O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Logitech Utility] Logi_MwX.Exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MimBoot] C:\PROGRA~1\MUSICM~1\MUSICM~1\mimboot.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MessengerPlus3] "C:\Program Files\MessengerPlus! | After rebooting from Safe Mode my computer, on its own, gave me the start-up menu (the one where you choose Safe Mode or Last Known Good Configuration, etc.). Apparently, there was an error while starting up. I chose LKGC, it tried to start up, gave me the same menu. I didn't know what the heck I could do now, but I tried LKGC again. This time, it worked. Then, after running HJT, while trying to go back into Safe Mode, I was forced to choose the Safe Mode option twice. Once the menu came up by my own design, once it was, apparently, from an error. :/ Also, when starting up (in normal mode) Spybot alerted me to a registry change. "zod32.exe" was being deleted, by what I don't know. To be on the safe side, I denied the change; I can delete it if I need to, since I know where it is, and this way the HJT log shows the situation as it's usually been. One other interesting this is that Windows Messenger works normally in normal mode. It was quite a surprise to see "Captain Fantastic" message me. :P The slowness is pretty odd; everything seems normal, on the desktop. Then you try to open something, anything... I'm surprised I managed to open HJT, but I found that normal folders work if you're prepared to be very, very patient. Everything runs at a normal speed and MSN works. However, I just tried Internet Explorer, and while it starts up normally it still closes/crashes whenever I attempt to go anywhere but my homepage (which is loaded automatically). But I don't care - I use Firefox anyway.
