Boot-time spyware scan
I recently purchased Sunbelt Software's Counterspy V2 and PC tools Spyware Doctor. I ran scans with both of them only to turn up a few cookies and such. Then all of a sudden I was doing a reboot and I found an anti-spyware app doing a boot-time spyware scan. I had never seen that before and I didn't know that either of the programs I bought were able to do that. I think it may have been from Counterspy but I was just wondering if anyone knew anything about it. The funny thing is, when it was doing the scan it didn't say anything about which program it was and I also don't thing it was any roque spyware cleaner.

Hi, Even the free version has a bootup scanner,

"Deep-rooted malware is exterminated at boot time, before Windows loads"

That's from the features on the CounterSpy site....

Next time you restart, maybe you can be sure it is CounterSpy.

Some antivirus programs, do scan at bootup, AVG for one, does that.

It's also possible that you can set CounterSpy to not scan at startup.... since you are fairly sure that no spyware exists now, that would probably be OK to do, but you do want to look in Help for CounterSpy, or the FAQs at the site before setting it that way.

CounterSpy only runs the boot-time scan when something has been found in its normal scan. If you think it's operating incorrectly, you should contact Sunbelt Support -- support@sunbeltsoftware.com or 877-673-1153

Hi, I don't see what would trigger a boot time scan, if all that was found, was this:

We are not sure which program it was actually.

CounterSpy does have scheduled scans where you can set the time to run a scan- and that could be one cause.

If you installed it yesterday, and the default settings for a scheduled scan happened to be 3 am, but your computer was off, when you start up at, for example, 9 am, that scan may either start, (or pop up a message about the missed scan, and then start- )

I'm not sure it would try to do a scheduled scan that was missed-
only pointing to a possible.


I've used AVG antivirusfor several years, and this new 7.5 version, does by default, run a full scan at the first startup of the day, but it can be turned off. <<check your antivirus program for startup options, perhaps it was that program, not CS or PC Tools.....

I guess you will have to keep an eye on things and see what happens after your next scan, which you could do any time, and that might put some light on things for you. If it prompts for a restart, or the next time you actually do restart if a scan begins with CS, then there must have been something detected that needs the bootup scan- perhaps, you are not reading the correct results from the scan?

Did you get a copy of the User Guide?

There is a lot of details in there about how to manage the scan results.
