Wouldn't that just beat all if the light was burned out??

Could have had a short in the phone cable you replaced as well!

You might as well reboot and check it out...

I know, right!? What makes me think that wasn't the original issue is my internet light would flash off and on randomly when I was having connection problems yesterday. Now it's just completely off and my computer has never run better. I mean it's quick (ok, for a Dell d/t 2400 256k...it is to me!) Now I have that little bug in me that wants to know the eternal question WHY? And I did reboot my computer earlier due to that silly Windows Update and everything seems fine. Of course, I flat out refuse to turn off, touch or even breathe on my modem. It has a little magic bubble around it now. It also has a new name. Instead of "Piece of @(#@ Modem" it has been rechristened "Uber Modem".

Thanks again for all your help and patience. There's soooo much to learn about computers and I'm finding out sometimes it is better to just leave well enough alone.

I still want to know why....

If the modem is supplied by the ISP you should have it replaced if found faulty. However if it is your modem and the light is out... that's up to you.

The light on my machine that says it is on does not work, since I changed the motherboard, but I know when it's on and I'm too busy to fuss with finding the plug that's not in the right slot.
