I see the post. I'll look at the file and get back to you.

All that I'm getting is the text file and not the server.exe file.
Are you aware of anything "server" that you are running?
Can you restart in Safe mode, copy the file to your desktop and then try to upload it? Don't worry about putting it in the package.

tried again
I tried again, but how do I know if the file was successfully uploaded. I attached the file in the correct place. The name of the file is: "requested-files[2007-04-30_20_53]" At least that's what's on my desktop. The "attach" browser at thespykiller.com doesn't allow me to go deeper into it than that. Also, the file size is only 357 bytes if that tells you anything.

Was I supposed to try to do the original extraction (the creation of this file I'm trying to send) in safe mode?

There is a zip file there but the contents are only a text file and not the executable/server.exe. If you copy it to your desktop you should be able to upload it as it will not be running.

Also you can not see the uploaded files at thespykiller.com. That is by design so bad files can not be downloaded.

From you:

I'm not aware of anything "server" that I'm running. I just took a look in my C:\windows folder and there isn't a file called server.exe

I just did a search for any file called server.exe and came up blank.

I can't upload in safe mode because for some reason none of my browsers will work when I try. They won't even load up the google homepage. I tried it in IE, Firefox, and AOL.

OK let's not mess around with it any more.

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Policies\Explorer\Run: [start] C:\WINDOWS\server.exe

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

Please download the OTMoveIt by OldTimer.
  • Save it to your desktop.
  • Please double-click OTMoveIt.exe to run it.
  • Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose copy):

    C:\WINDOWS\server.exe

  • Return to OTMoveIt, right click on the "Paste List of Files/Folders to be moved" window and choose Paste.
  • Click the red Moveit! button.
  • Close OTMoveIt
If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Okay, I did it but the OTMoveIt program couldn't find the file. Here's what it said in the "Results" column:

File/Folder C:\WINDOWS\server.exe not found.

Also, I just ran HJT again and that line you had me check that ended with "server.exe" is gone.

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

O20 - Winlogon Notify: wvuvvsp - wvuvvsp.dll (file missing)

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

Looks fine. How is it running now? Any problems?

Everything seems to be working fine now. The pop-ups and hang-ups seem to be gone.
Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!

I'm wondering, is it safe to use HJT to fix all the other things in the listing that appear with "(file missing)" on the end?
For example:
O9 - Extra button: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: PartyPoker.com - {B7FE5D70-9AA2-40F1-9C6B-12A255F085E1} - C:\Program Files\PartyPoker\PartyPoker.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra button: (no name) - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - %windir%\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe (file missing)
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: @xpsp3res.dll,-20001 - {e2e2dd38-d088-4134-82b7-f2ba38496583} - %windir%\Network Diagnostic\xpnetdiag.exe (file missing)

I don't have Party Poker on this machine anymore and I have no idea what the other two are for.

Yes you can fix those with HJT.

Does this one remain gone?

That file, and the ones I listed, are all gone. Unless there's something else you think I need to do, I think you've gotten me through this. It's greatly appreciated.

If I can ask one last question... currently, I have the following programs (some of which I got from you) to combat the kinds of problems you just help me get rid of:
The Shield Anti-Virus 2006
Webroot Spy Sweeper
SUPERAntiSpyware
AVG Anti-Malware

Do you have any recommendations as to what I should continue to run or a recommendation of something better than these? I want to avoid going through this again.

Thanks.
Jim
