Solved: hard drive always running
My hard drive seems to be running way to often. How do I figure out what's running?

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

  • Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
  • Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
  • By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  • Click on Install.
  • It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  • Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
  • Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  • Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
  • Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  • DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Run HJT again and put a check in the following:

O16 - DPF: {9522B3FB-7A2B-4646-8AF6-36E7F593073C} - http://a19.g.akamai.net/7/19/7125/14...2/cpbrkpie.cab

Close all applications and browser windows before you click "fix checked".

Click Start - Run, type in MSCONFIG, then click OK - "Startup" tab. Remove the checkmark from:

jusched.exe

qttask.exe

(Note: The above entry pertains to QuickTime. Every time you open and use it, it will re-enable in the startup list, so you'll need to go back and disable again)

Adobe Reader Speed Launch reader_sl.exe

OSA.EXE

MySurveyMessenger.exe

smARTupdate.exe

Click Apply - OK afterwards, then reboot. When the SCU window appears during reboot, ignore the message. Place a checkmark in the window, then click OK.

I'm not sure what the last two are but you can decide if you need those running at startup.

Thank you. It appears to be working.....!

That brings me to one of the other problems that I've been having - when I reboot, the computer is frozen on the black screen where it lists the copyright info. No matter how long that I wait it's frozen. Nothing works (control/alt/delete, etc.). The only thing that works is turning the computer off/on. Any thoughts????

Great! You're welcome!

Sounds like a hardware problem. How old is the computer? I think you should post a new thread in the Hardware forum for that and give as many details as you can about the system.

4 years does not *sound* like a long time but for a hard drive you could be getting near End of Life.
