Solved: Solved: msn not responding and PC being super slow

My MSN keeps freezing and in the top bar (where the neame of the application goes) it says 'windows live messenger (not responding)'. My PC is also alot slower recently, and at times, the whole PC freezes for about 1-2 mins. Could this be a sign it has a virus?

Iv used my Mcafee software to scan, but it doesnt find anything. Can anyone help me find the source of the problem, and eliminate it please?

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

Click here to download HJTInstall.exe

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

Run HJT again, Right click and Run as Administrator, put a check in the following:

Ok iv just done that. After trying to do a new HJT scan, I recieved this message:

For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file, HijackThis may NOT be able to fix this.

If that happens, you need to edit the file yourself. To do this, click Start, Run and type:

notepad C:\Windows\System32\drivers\ect\hosts

and press Enter. find th line(s) HijackThis reports and delete them.
Save the file as 'hosts.' (with quotes), and reboot.

For Vista: simply exit HijackThis, right click on the HijackThis icon, choose 'Run as administrator'.

(I manuely typed that myself as I couldnt copy and paste that, I didnt get that message the first time, so (as I have vista), I did what it says).

It did always work, it was just that after a while it wont respond and I would need to close it using 'task manager'. I'll make a new reply tomorrow or friday and tell you if it beomes non-responsive again.

If you have more problems run Malwarebytes' and let me know the results. I'm not sure it's malware but it hides pretty well these days.

Download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop. alternate download link 1 alternate download link 2

Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
Double-click on Download_mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
- Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
- Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan. If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue. If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
- Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
- Then click on the Scan button.
If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen, click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply with a new hijackthis log.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

I'll do the scan anyways, even if MSN is ok, just too make sure. I'll do the scan tomarrow, just before I leave to go to school.

I dont know if this is related at all... But my internet keeps cutting out alot recently as well, usually for about a minute each time. Can that also be sorted or is that a problem elsewhere?

No, im using a wired modem, wired from the wall to the modem, to the PC.

Im off to bed now, so i'll do the scan tomarrow, start it just before i go to school, i'll be at home about 1 hour after I arrive at school (exams) so I can submit the log files early (before your even out of bed). I'll do the malware scan then the new HijackThis and submit both log files on here.

There has also been a new folder created (on its own). It wasnt there yesterday. The folder is called:
{07345418-c9d8-43df-802c-6c5761f3dee3}
The folder is located:
C:\Users\James\{07345418-c9d8-43df-802c-6c5761f3dee3}
and inside the folder is:
adfuud.sys (system file)
AdfuUpdate (setup information)

Are they safe?

Those appear to be some type of MP3 player. If you did not download them delete the folder.
