Virtumundo in Vista (among others)
I downloaded an .exe which was masquerading as another program and virtumundo got dropped onto my system along with memwatcher, among other different spywares. Spybot S&D was able to remove the majority of other infections, but continued scans using trend micro house call show these threats.

posted here is the HJT log

I notice a lot of my files are missing, which may explain why, when I start up my comp, logon screen looks fine, but then the desktop is totally black (mouse is visible) and in order to use it, I need to kill explorer.exe process and then restart it.

Any help with the removal of this spyware would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to TSG

Before we start, i need you to remove any P2P programs (if they are installed), otherwise you will just keep getting infected.

Download Combofix from any of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this webpage: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/comb...o-use-combofix

Link 1
Link 2
Link 3

**Note: It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**

--------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Close any open browsers.

2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  • When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  • Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Thanks
I'll do it when i get home from work tomorrow.

However in a quick test of the exe, it says not compatible OS.

However, on reading the documentation it was said to boot it in the windows recovery console located on the Windows Vista disk....

so I'll do that tomorrow then.

In my inevitable clumsiness I forgot to mention that my version of vista ultimate is 64 bit (to take advantage of my Q6600) so combofix doesn't work on 64bit installs....so is there another program which I can use?

Sorry about the inconvenience.

Nothing will run on 64bit system. You are probably better to reformat. Nothing we use here is for 64bit systems. Sorry
