I've asked someone to take a look for you, but if you ran the tool Crucial had, and that ram was what they recommended, then it should be okay to install.

I trust them, I get all my Ram from them

Hi there, Eddie has asked me to look in on you. You DEFINITELY need more ram. Pronto. No worries about it "breaking" anything. It will either be recognized and picked up by the system, or the system won't start, or the system won't see it. No damage will be done.

And perhaps change your virus program to something a little less "taxing" on your system. And of course you do know that your cpu is pretty slow.

hi AcaCandy - thanks for popping in

re: the virus program, i did read a few threads here that mentioned not running more than one program, and that AVG was a good one to have. i think i have 2 symantec thingies running - a firewall and antivirus. will AVG replace both of those? also, is teatime considered an antivirus program? that's been running since i ran superantivirus.

*********

re: CPU being slow - i think i misunderstood the way this works. i thought my low RAM caused my CPU usage to peak - in other words, 100% CPU was a reflection of low RAM or something else dragging it down. is CPU something i can/should attend to separately? if so, what's involved?

**************

re: the RAM.....i just replaced 3 128 sticks with 3 256 sticks. i bought CL-2 as i thought that would help the speed. my computer is currently working with 2 sticks, but not with 3. i found and saved this thread the other day - someone had the same problem and was advised to change the bios to clock at CL-3. is this advice that will allow me to use all 3 sticks? and if so, how do i do that? http://www.motherboardpoint.com/t253...33mhz-cl2.html

***********

sorry if i'm asking a lot, but i'm sure you know from being an admin that many answers lead to more questions. i really appreciate this!!

wow...i just looked at the time of my last post and i've been farting around with this for the past 6+ hours!

okay, so to update my last message...

1. skip the part about the antivirus questions. i've done a full removal of symantec by following a link that took me to "ask dave taylor". then i uploaded AVG. completed without issues.

2. i found the link to 'dave taylor' in this thread:
http://forums.techguy.org/general-se...tell-what.html

there is a post on p3 of that thread that lists a bunch of clean up stuff; also in that thread is a link to an article called "why is my computer slow" - i did stuff from there too, as well as followed that article to pc pitstop. i also updated my java. if need be, i can go through and list everything i did.

Results & current status:

my computer seems zippier as far as page loading and the like. but the CPU is still hitting just about 100% when doing simple things like scrolling up and down.

AND....the worst thing is that nothing has changed with regard to sites that use flashplayer! this is the problem that was bothering me the most.

my granddaughter and i play on the Webkinz.com site, and all the games run in slow motion on my computer. some things work faster if i minimize the screen, but obviously you can't play a game that way.

it's not just that site. if you go to this "elf yourself" page, the video takes forever to load. and then once it starts playing, the music starts first, then the video is way behind, then it freezes, then the people dance in slow motion, then they freeze and some more music plays, and then it's over - sometimes it just quits playing. oh - here's the page:

http://elfyourself.jibjab.com/view/K...SzAidT5BCOtdhS

so........i still have the two questions about CPU and RAM that i posted in the previous post, and i'm trying to figure out if either has to do with the problems i'm experiencing.

here's my latest hijack this log....

Regarding the cpu, I had that same motherboard a few years ago and was running Windows 98 on it....as to upgrading it, sounds like you already dumped over $100 into ram.....you know that you can pretty much buy a modern computer for around $350, maybe less with the upcoming Christmas sales?

You aren't going to make a speed demon out of that in any event. It may be able to take a P3 chip, I can't remember without doing more research. I've been out of town traveling for over a week, thus the reason for my very delayed replies.

Oh, and your video card ram has an effect on things like that too. You are probably running something with maybe 32 megs of ram on it or even less..........

okay, i'm not really sure how to take that info, but i feel like i just got told that i might as well give it up because i have a piece of crap.

i don't need a speed demon. i just want to play a game with my granddaughter that most kids around the world can play.

someone was generous enough to give me this computer which i never could've afforded myself. scraping together the $100 i spent was hard enough, so it's not an option for me to "just go buy a new one".

right now i'm only using 2/3 of what i bought and would really like to find out if i'm even on the right track. if there was any helpful info in that last post, it went right over my head.

but thanks for taking the time to post. i'll see if eddie has any last ideas for me.

It appears that you took my post entirely the wrong way.

I'm not sure what kind of games you are going to want to play, but, many of the newer games that most kids are playing now are cpu and video card intensive. Older, slower machines simply can't and won't run them, and/or run them very painfully slow and jerky, regardless how much you attempt to upgrade it. I only mentioned that because you brought up replacing the cpu.

As for the bios change, there is a key to hit when the computer starts up, most often it is the DEL, F1, F2 key. Once there go from page to page and see if there is anything mentioned about the CL-3 entry you mentioned.

BTW, do you have an add in video card in the AGP slot or are you running the monitor via the onboard video?

sorry, but i'm really lost...

i don't even know what CPU is or that it was replaceable. i thought CPU was a measurement, not a part. so when you said i had a slow CPU, i asked for clarification on how to address that.

bottom line on what my problem is, is that sites that require flashplayer run in a jerky fashion like you described. i asked if the memory i was running was the cause and i think i misunderstood you to say that it would help. so i opened the packages of what i bought and found that it's not helping with this problem. and i think now you're saying that no matter what i do, it's not going to help? or that the things i need to change would cost more than a new computer?

can we take a step back, because i think you believe i have a better understanding of this than i really do. i don't know how to answer the question about the video card. i don't know what a P3 chip is.

i did check in the BIOS but i couldn't find anything about the CL setting. i can check again if you tell me what 'section' it might be in, or what words to look for.

or....if the site would work with the 512 MB i have installed, maybe i can return the extra stick and spend the money on something else that would help.

btw, the person who gave this to me got it from a friend who built it in a computer class, so they probably went the cheap route - hence the low "everything" inside the box.

i have an extra Sony computer sitting around that had windows2000 installed - maybe there's something in that computer that would actually be better? i'm willing to sort it out if someone has the patience to walk me through it.

thanks, and sorry i misunderstood your post
~chris

p.s. the site we're having problems with is webkinz.com. if it would help to know what kind of site it is, i could give you one of our account names & the pass so you could see how 'intensive' it is - i think it's pretty simple, really. another example of what i can't do is the elf yourself link i posted above:

Back now, as the weekend I was away. Having a read at what has happened, and will have a look at the site for you know.

I think I have an idea on what type of games you're trying to play. Being an actual gamer, I understand about the use of high end cards for certain games. The one I play all the time is a multiplayer game, and we need plenty of RAM to play on the servers.

But, I digress. I think, without looking yet, that the ones you want are just gentle type of games, if just Flash-based, you should be able to play them okay.

Okay, back in a min or two

Okay, I've had a look and it requires Flash 10. Now, that is a new one, as I had to just recently update the past few weeks to that myself.

Go here and tell me what version it shows:

hi eddie! thanks for coming back and for checking the site. that's weird that it's needing Flash 10, because my granddaughter joined up last christmas and i ended up getting an account to play with her early this year. the site had already been up a good year before she discovered it, so how could it require the newest version?

but you're correct in it being a "gentle", low-tech type of game. and some things do work fine, but the pets walk around in slow motion, and the games play as if they're coated in caramel! sometimes a character will 'talk' and you can hear the sound before their mouth starts moving - then no sound, but the mouth is still blah-blah-blahing (just like i am now )

i'll check my flash when i get home and report back.

okie-dokee, it says i've got 10.0.12.36

i was going to guess that's what i had since i just uninstalled and reinstalled flash last week (i had an earlier version from another failed experiment, and i wanted to be sure i was all squeaky clean and up to date before i re-visited the flash question) but yeah, i wanted to be sure.

so now that i'm sure, what's next?

Can you PM me the password/account you use. Don't worry, I'll delete the PM after its finished, so it won't be in my account here at TSG

Just curious to what that site uses, etc.
