OHHKAY so...

I seem to have gotten something nasty. I downloaded spybot S&D and removed a couple suspicious start up items and one that was a known trojan. Rundll32.exe was also in my start-up menu according to spybot, so I removed it but when I restarted as soon as I opened up firefox I got the same IE pop-up and when I opened task manager, sure enough, rundll32 was running.

Now I feel like I screwed up not coming here first. There was something I removed, virtumonde or something?....anyway I remember doing a websearch on it and finding that it caused the exact problems I'm having. So now I'm wondering if I didn't get rid of it the right way.

I've removed probably about 25 viruses, trojans, and other assorted nasties (maybe more) with Avast and Spybot since discovering my problem, but I'm still having problems. Anyway, here's my hijack this:

It appears that everyone's too busy here to follow up on this and after uninstalling Avast and replacing it with Avira, this virus is driving me nuts. So I'm just going to try and salvage some of my more important files and reinstall XP if this thread isn't bumped in the next couple days or so.

This virus reminds me of the one I got last year, which forced me to reinstall XP. Some file names the virus is using are not showing up in a google search, so I'll list them here. The virus is showing up as "TR/Crypt.XPACK.GEN" which looks like some sort of serial number generator. I'd like to point out that I was NEVER, at any time, surfing for pirated software. The file names that keep popping up associated with this virus are "pehxaq.dll", "efcCVNGV.dll", and "pmnlmnoN.dll".

I'd like to take this opportunity to endorse Avira over Avast, as well. Although it's driving me crazy right now, it seems to be much better at detecting viruses than Avast.

I've also repeatedly tried to get rid of Smitfraud, Virtumonde, and a few other malware/trojans with Spybot, but to no avail. I'm guessing it's all related.
