A new profile is empty until you fill it as it gives you a new Personal Folders (.pst file).

You can connect the original Personal Folders (.pst file) that contains the Contacts folder to the new profile, this way:
File > Open > Outlook Data File
Browse to the location of the original .pst file and select it.

The original Personal Folders will appear in Outlook.

Looking good so far - two hours and no deletions - which would seem to indicate that all is well. So many many thanks. One thing - I seem to have numerous other personal data files - and when I open the calendar it is blank until I search for the relevant one which has the data. Is there a quicker way of making it open this one first - like the prompt instructions for Contacts. Whatever it's great to have solved it! So thanks again - and no need to worry about Malware...

When you created a new profile, Outlook created a new Personal Folders which became the new Default Delivery Location.

If you want to make the original Personal Folders the Default Delivery Location, that can be done.

The Default Delivery Location is the Personal Folders (.pst file) where your messages are delivered by default (unless you configure Rules to move messages to other Personal Folders).

It is worthwhile to note that the name: Personal Folders can be changed:
Right click the top/root folder of the Personal Folders,
Properties for "Personal Folders" > General tab > Advanced Button
In the Name field, you can add a letter or number to the current name or change the name entirely.
Click: Apply, OK

This will make it easier to locate which Personal Folders you are selecting when changing the Default Delivery Location.

In Outlook 2003:
Tools > E-mail Accounts > View or change existing e-mail accounts > Next
In the section labeled: Deliver new e-mail to the following location:
Click the drop down arrow and select the original Personal Folders (this is where it is helpful to have a distinguishing name to choose from).
Click: Finish
You will see a message that the change will go into effect after closing and reopening Outlook.

Close and restart Outlook 2003.

When Outlook 2003 starts, Outlook will deliver messages to the new Default Delivery Location.
You can move your messages, Contacts etc., from the other Personal Folders into the original Personal Folders. If you no longer want the other Personal Folders in Outlook, Right click the top/root folder of the Personal Folders and select: Close "Name of Personal Folders"

The Personal Folders disappears from Outlook 2003.

After the above has been completed, let us know if the proper Calendar appears for you.

bad news - it's still deleting - but seems to be doing it when I pick up e mails using Outlook Express. So - Malware perhaps after all?

and even more sadly there seems to be no pattern - I have added a couple of test new contacts - one of them disappeared when I picked up e mails - the other remained and then went a few minutes later. Is there a way I could maybe recreate the whole database ( I am a journalist so it's important I don't lose contacts) if I back it up in word - there are though nearly 2,000 addresses in there so it would be a labour! I feel that it isn't malware but some duplicating or archiving error - until I closed down the unwanted personal (pst) files the cure seemed to have worked. Suspect there is some duplicate folder problem - looking now there seems to be an Outlook file, an Outlook 1 file and an archive file when I rightclick on the root file of personal folders. Is that correct? Sorry for the bother - all help appreciated needless to say

and yet more - I open the computer this morning - the test contact address I added last night is still there - but then the reminders for today's appointments comes up on the3 screen - and seconds later the test contact is deleted - !

yet more - interesting that the deleted addresses are all ones I have added recently - could it be returning to some default position?

Good call on creating Test Contacts.

It sounds like something outside of Outlook is reversing the changes you are making.

What Add-ins do you see for Outlook 2003?
Tools > Options > Other tab > Advanced Options button > Add-In Manager button

Just to clarify your setup, you use Outlook Express for messages and Outlook 2003 for Contacts?
Are you sharing Contacts between Outlook Express and Outlook 2003?
Is the Address Book shared?

Yes, you can Export the Contacts from Outlook 2003 to a .csv file (text file) which would serve as a backup.
Export the Contacts as a .csv file:
File > Import and Export > Export to a file > Next > Next
Select the Contacts folder
Next >
Browse to the location you are saving the file and name the file.
Next > Finish
Locate the .csv file and if desired, copy it to a CD/DVD or another directory.

I have 'Exchange Extensions Property Pages' ticked in the add-manager button - and there is a shared contacts folder which I didn't know about which has only 5 contacts in it - not sure where that came from. Yes I use Outlook Express for e mails and Outlook for Contacts - but thinking about it there are e mail addresses in my contacts folder which I don't remember adding so there must be a shared element between the e mail address book - and the Outlook Contacts - maybe that could be the problem? I'll do a back up as you suggest any - thanks for your time and interest -
