Unhappy After virus removal, several system problems
Hi,
Last week, my VAIO laptop had a severe attack of win32 virus, trojans and worms. (I have Win XP home.)
Since then I used CasperSky (antivirus), Spybot SD, SuperAntiSpyware and AVG to remove all the threats. Now my computer is apprently virusfree, but they have left my computer in a very bad condition.

The processes svchost, sqlsrvr, ctfmon etc. were affected and had to be disinfected. May be that has corrupted the svchost?

1. Even before the Login options come up, error message pops up - "Instruction at address 0x000.... refers instruction at 0x000... Memory cannot be read". - This error pops up about 5 times before Windows finally comes up.

2. in Security center, both the "Automatic Updates" and "Windows Firewall" are disabled. They are grayed out and i cannot enable them.

3. Network connections are gone. I connect to the internet via broadband cable. When i ping the service provider through command prompt, the ping succeeds. That means internet is alright. But when I try to "View Existing connections" in My Network places, error message says "Cannot show network connections. Make sure Internet connection and sharing (ICS) service is running". I have manually started the service but still error remains the same.
Tried to troubleshoot the Ethernet adapter but it says alright.
However - Network connections are intact and working when i boot in Safe mode!! Firewall, thought, cannot be enabled even in Safe mode.

4. DCOM service cannot be started - although it is specified as Automatic startup. After I manually start it, it takes long time and then says "this service could not be started as it didnot respond in a timely fashion."

5. The services - "Theme", "Windows Firewall", and a couple more are in Stopped status after restart, even though they are specified as Automatic startup.

6. Desktop is gone after every restart and when I click on the button "Recover Active Desktop", a script error pops up - saying "Error in line ## - Do you still want the script to continue?" - If I say Yes, nothing happens.

7. Windows Installer dialog box pops up whenever it wishes- whatever I do. It is happening unpredictably. Could not find a pattern yet.

I do not have a restore option - as because all the exe files in Restore folder had got corrupted and my antivirus deleted most of them.

I do not want to format and reinstall windows.
Please help.

Thanks a lot in advance

I suggest that you request the assistance of the malware removal experts at TGF to verify that all malware has been removed. You might have more malware. It is equally possible that you have no malware present, BUT your OS files have been corrupted.

For example, if solitaire [ sol.exe ] was infected and corrupted, you might not be able to play solitare, or it might not function properly.

I suggest that you begin backing up your data, immediately.

Personally, I think you should click on the "report" link of your post and ask the moderator to move your thread to the

malware removal forum, to be certain that the malware is gone.

At the XP forum, there are methods of repairing XP.

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt...l-windows.html

Which version of Windows? Which type [ home, ultimate ]? Which SP?

When I clicked on the pc icon for your profile, it did not open.

Thanks RF123.

I will keep all posted on my progress. For now, hoping against hope that I dont really have to format ultimately!

Thanks,
