Question Virtual Memory too low... self restoring virus? HELP!
One day my parents were on the computer. They were using firefox with NOTHING else running and they get low virtual memory error. We thought its not a big problem its only once. Next day we installed AVG free antivirus and it removed 2 viruses. Later that day the virtual memory error happened. I then used Malwarebyte's to scan and it found 6 more infections. The infections were deleted (checked myself). Next two days same problem. Got the Kaspersky Anti Virus trial, Scanned the computer, two more infections. Thing is I don't know if it's still infected or if the page file has a problem. Cleared up startup completely. Removed unnecessary files. Ran CCleaner. Defragged disk with Defraggler. Please Help!

Hi,and Welcome to TSG,
I think you need to post a HijackThis Log, instructions at this TSG 'sticky':
http://forums.techguy.org/malware-re...st-before.html
You'll need to 'report' this thread to ask for it to be moved to the Malware forum.
Please be patient as there aren't that many qualified Malware experts but there are loads of people seeking their help.
Richard.

Hi,
If you 'report' your thread using the 'report' link just under where you've written "this moved". Ask for it to go to the HJT / malware forum.

darkdays:

I'll reported your thread be moved to the "malware/hijackthis" section.

You need to install and run HijackThis and post a log, as requested, because one will be asked for.

Be patient and wait for a reply.

Post the entire log here.

Copy-and-paste it. Don't post it as an attachment.

Thanks for posting the log.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Uninstall Logitech Desktop Messenger, then go into C:\Program Files\Logitech and delete the Logitech Messenger folder, if it's still there.

Restart your computer.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Sun Java Runtime Environment is out of date. Version 1.6.0.12(6 Update 12) is the current version.

Download it from here. Save it and don't install it yet.

Uninstall version 1.6.0.01 and any other older versions.

Go into the C:\Program Files\Java folder and delete any leftover folders.

Restart your computer.

Install version 1.6.0.12.

----------------------------------------------------------------

After the above has been done, run a new HijackThis scan, then post that new log here.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Logitech Desktop Messenger isn't needed, and you can see what a difference your second log looks like, compared to your first log, after you uninstalled it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Don't forget to uninstall the old Java version(s) and install the new Java version.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

How much RAM is in that computer?

How large is the hard drive and how much free space is there?

Wow the second log is really cleaned out of all that Logitech stuff I can see that.

Oops didn't see the part to update java. I updated it just now and restarted the computer.

The computer has 512mb RAM.

The hard drive is 182gb size total and free space is a bit over 152gb meaning about 30gb is used up. Theres also a D: drive but I don't think its been used. It is meant for system backup and restore though.

That's correct. Most all new factory-brand computers now come with a smaller separate D partition that stores the recovery files. When you start your computer, a logo screen should appear that tells you which key to press if you want to access that partition and do a recovery. Hopefully, that won't ever be necessary to do.

512 MB of RAM isn't enough anymore for XP and all its associated apps. You should add another 512 MB. Besides increasing overall performance, it should get rid of that virtual memory problem.

What's the brand name, model name, and model number of your computer? That'll allow me to determine how much RAM it supports and what type RAM module it uses.

The computer is a Gateway 507GR and i'm not sure if the 507GR is the model name or model number that's the info it gives on the computer itself and under properties when I right click on My Computer.

Is it really going to be necessary to increase RAM though? All that's done on that computer is internet surfing and sometimes a little photo editing. The uses have not changed. I'm just wondering because what happens is that the page file usage slowly increases even if there is no activity. Usually the error comes up after we come back to get on the internet from a couple of hours of inactivity and we notice the error and all we had was the screensaver on with no other applications. Then it slowly increases after that until firefox won't open or will open and crash on the next web page. Then a reboot is necessary to fix the page file for half the day.

This is the support site for the Gateway 507GR that you should keep in your browser favorites list for future use.

It comes with 512 MB of PC3200 (400 MHz) RAM, but supports up to 2048 MB.

If you're insistent on sticking with 512 MB, then keep the load on your computer as small as possible. By keeping the startup load as small as possible, reducing the amount of visual effects, and not using too many memory-hungry programs, it'll help to keep your computer from running like a snail.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Right-click MY COMPUTER, click Advanced - Settings(Performance) - Visual Effects - Custom, uncheck everything except "Show windows contents while dragging", "Smooth edge of screen fonts", and the bottom 4 "Use - -" commands. Click Advanced - Change(Virtual Memory), select "System managed size" and click Set, click OK - Apply - OK - Apply - OK.

Advise me when that's done, then we'll trim down the startup load.
