also something i've noticed is my disk drives seems to open randomly, especially if i pick up my laptop and apply force to certain parts of the underside. i find it unusual for it to open for any reason other than pressing the open button...could this have any effect on the display or audio? since i noticed it i stopped using the drive but i'm not sure if it could have anything to do with the skipping problem

did you try this from my last post
try here & see if you have PIO mode enabled instead of DMA

http://winhlp.com/node/10

is it still skipping etc

if you get strange behaviour from touching or pressing underneath the case then yes, it sounds like there could be a short circuit causing the problem

next as you have no antivirus and are using P2P

download trial, version of Kaspersky antivirus from http://thespykiller.co.uk/index.php?page=21

run a full system scan & see what it finds & fixes

It seems my school has mislabeled it as a site known for spyware so I can't access that page here but I will find somewhere else to download it from and let you know the results.

Update: I have solved the problem. I am not sure exactly how but to fix it, I put in the windows installation cd and when it came up with the choice to repair or install a new windows i chose repair. I never tried it before because i thought it would wipe everything i had saved but it seems all it did was fix the problem, possibly mislabeled or corrupt registry entries.

I have a new problem however. My disk defragmenter does not defragment my whole computer. It has crashed before and when i rebooted it I made it under a new name. Now a folder under c:/Documents and Settings/ with the old name still exists and is not accessible by me. When i run disk defragmenter it says there were some files that could not be defragmented, all from that folder. Is there a way i can delete the folder or defragment the files in it? I do not need any of the files in it anymore.

there are always some files that will be in use or locked that windows cannot defrag and it isn't normally worth worrying about

sometimes you can boot to safe mode & use inbuilt admin account to do a defrag to get those files

Ok because i brought it to bestbuy and the free scan they did revealed over 40% fragmentation. Do you know if there is a way to make the files not read only? When i remove the checkbox it reappears as soon as i reopen the properties...I'm not sure why it does not maintain it.

and were BestBuy trying to sell you a super-duper defrag program by any chance

For files or folders that are never used there is no worry or point in spending hours worrying about them needing to be defragged

boot to safe mode & select the default administrators account

then delete the unwanted folder BUT make 100% sure that it is the correct folder you are deleting

if you go to control panel/user accounts

is there an account still in the old name. If there is then delete it & then files should be unlocked
