Question Major XP Issues / No Updates / No Restore / IE Not Functioning HELP!!!!
ok, so I have a Dell Desktop running XP, according to whom I received it from it was "working fine". I offered to take a look, I first ran all the spyware programs as usual, found a few things, nothing major. Installed AVG, found nothing. Tried to check the Windows Updates but IE will not load the update page. I checked for a restore point, system restore will not load at all. I reset IE, still no update page. It also will not display any page requiring Flash, although I tried to install it, flash, multiple times. Bottom line is this XP is crawling, it will not auto update, will not let me make it update, IE will not display flash, its seems bogged down in general. I aslo tried uninstalling IE 8 and going with 7 but I got the same results Below is my HiJack this log file: ANNNNYYY HELP would be greatly appreciated. THanks for your time.

Hi, dirtyp3944

Welcome.

Please read and follow all these instructions very carefully

Please download ComboFix from Here or Here to your Desktop.

**Note: In the event you already have Combofix, this is a new version that I need you to download. It is important that it is saved directly to your desktop**
  1. Please, never rename Combofix unless instructed.
  2. Close any open browsers.
  3. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
    -----------------------------------------------------------
    • Very Important! Temporarily disable your anti-virus, script blocking and any anti-malware real-time protection before performing a scan. They can interfere with ComboFix or remove some of its embedded files which may cause "unpredictable results".
    • Click on this link to see a list of programs that should be disabled. The list is not all inclusive. If yours is not listed and you don't know how to disable it, please ask.
      -----------------------------------------------------------
    • Close any open browsers.
    • WARNING: Combofix will disconnect your machine from the Internet as soon as it starts
    • Please do not attempt to re-connect your machine back to the Internet until Combofix has completely finished.
    • If there is no internet connection after running Combofix, then restart your computer to restore back your connection.
    -----------------------------------------------------------
  4. Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
  5. If you receive a message that Combofix has detected the presence of rootkit activity and needs to reboot, kindly write down on paper the list of files present in the message before continuing, and post it in our next reply.
  6. Install the Recovery Console upon request.
  7. When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  8. Please post the "C:\ComboFix.txt" along with a new HijackThis log for further review.
**Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall**

Note: ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser.
Note: Combofix prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security.

Please do not install any new programs or update anything unless told to do so while we are fixing your problem.

Hi, dirtyp3944

You need an Antivirus application. I would suggest you use AVAST..

Please re-open HijackThis and scan. Check the boxes next to all the entries listed below.

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {8EAB99C9-F9EC-4b64-A4BA-D9BCAE8779C2} - (no file)

Now close all windows and browsers, other than HiJackThis, then click Fix Checked.

Close Hijackthis.

Please run a free online scan with the ESET Online Scanner
Note: You will need to use Internet Explorer for this scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the ActiveX control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the options Remove found threats and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan (This scan can take several hours, so please be patient)
  • Once the scan is completed, you may close the window
  • Use Notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic

Thanks
I had AVG installed but I knew I needed to disable it before running the combo fix so I uninstalled it, I will take the steps you recommended and repost. Thanks again!
