Well you had an awful lot of infection showing in the MalwareBytes log.

Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Kaspersky online scanner uses JAVA tecnology to perform the scan. If you do not have Java then you will need to go to the following link and download the latest version:

JRE 6 Update 13

Instructions for Kaspersky scan:
  1. Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button.
  2. It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run.
  3. When the downloads have finished, click on Settings.
  4. Make sure the following is checked.
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  5. Click on My Computer under Scan.
  6. Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report.
  7. You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As....
  8. Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button.
  9. Please post this log in your next reply.

thx a lot. i really appreciate all your help cookiegal. i was under the impression malwarebytes removed them because after i did a second scan it didn't find anything. but i'm glad i'm going through this cause now i'm using cleaners i never used before which DO happen to find a few more things the others have missed. (like how combofix found 2 more i think)

having peace of mind is so worth all this. and i can't wait to apply what i learned here to my siblings pc's.

but i'm probably more excited with the "lockdown" thread lunarlandar made. it's as if he can turn xp into linux with the way he locks it down. very exciting.


anyway. i'm waiting for kapersky to download itself. around 61 megs and i'm angry because normally that takes me seconds to complete. i recently got a new modem from my ISP and i don't know if i am now experiencing slower d/l's or if Kapersky just takes a while.

and my favorite speedtest website uses wierd number results which i think are supposed to be megaBITS. but i can't tell.

ah well.

aw man. now it jumped to around 100megs. >.<

Kaspersky does take a long time to download the definitions database and the scan is quite long too. Sorry to put you through that but it's the most reliable on-line scan and although you got clean results, it was well worth it.

Please post a new HijackThis log and let me know how things are with the system now.

oh yah. definately worth it. i love feeling safe. there were times long ago when after doing a spybot scan and getting NO RESULTS that i would still feel uneasy because it was hard for me to believe my system was really perfect. (sure i never had symptoms or problems) but i would at the very least except to clean out a few cookies. but spybot wouldn't give me cookies either.


i am very greatful to you for taking the time to help me fix my chkdsk harddrive errors after i did my very first Malwarebytes scan.

combofix was neat and seemed to fixed it right up after it's first run.

Rescan with HijackThis, close all other browser windows, place a check mark beside the following entries and then click on "Fix Checked".

R0 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = about:blank
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {5C255C8A-E604-49b4-9D64-90988571CECB} - (no file)

Go to Start - Run - type in msconfig - click OK and then click on the Startup Tab. Uncheck the following entry as it is not required to run at startup:

SunJavaUpdateSched

Also, unless you have the paid version of SuperAntiSpyware that includes realtime protection that needs to run at startup, uncheck the following entry as well (in the free version there is no realtime protection so the program doesn't need to run at startup):

SUPERAntiSpyware

Reboot and post a new HijackThis log and let me know if any problems remain please.

Here are some final instructions for you.


Follow these steps to uninstall Combofix and all of its files and components.
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type ComboFix /u in the runbox and click OK. Note the space between the X and the U, it needs to be there.


Now you should turn system restore off to flush out all previous system restore points, then turn it back on and create a new restore point:

To turn off system restore, on the Desktop, right click on My Computer and click on Properties.
Click the System Restore tab.
Check Turn off System Restore.
Click Apply and then click OK.

Restart your computer, turn System Restore back on and create a restore point.

To create a new restore point, click on Start – All Programs – Accessories – System Tools and then select System Restore.

In the System Restore wizard, select Create a restore point and click the Next button.

Type a name for your new restore point then click on Create.

I also recommend downloading SPYWAREBLASTER for added protection.

Read here for info on how to tighten your security.

how would i modify these instrctions if i've never had system restore on from the very begining? i was always puzzled when combofix would say it was creating one when it should have instead given me a notice that it was off. *shruggs*

my guess is i just uninstall it and then skip down to downloading spywareblaster? i never liked system restore. takes up space and the few times i used it, never seemed to fix anything at all. also i don't like how since it's like going back in time, i also lose stuff i didn't wanna lose. so i just make the habit of backing up on a regular basis and deal with the OS whenever i get problems or format if i couldn't solve it.

ComboFix may have turned it back on and created a restore point but I'm not sure if it can do that. In any event, uninstall ComboFix as per the instructions. Then just turn system restore back on and create a new restore point.
