Hello. I am new here so please pardon me if I do anything that isn't right. I am currently using Windows XP on a Dell computer. Earlier today, I opened Internet Explorer, did a Google search, and noticed that all the links I clicked either led me to a different search engine, or a different site altogether. The same thing was happening on my Mozilla Firefox. I did a complete scan with a trial version of AVG Internet Security, and it showed multiple items that had the word "Skynet" in them. I removed the items. My Mozilla firefox works fine now, but Internet Explorer remains the same. Please, any help would be much appreciated!

P2P PROGRAMS

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

P2P programs also open up access to the computer on which the program is installed. The computer's settings are more often than not changed in a manner that renders them insecure, and access to the computer is left open even when the program is not in use. Therefore, the system's security is compromised.

So be aware that it's not just what's downloaded with P2P programs that creates problems, just having the program installed is like leaving all the doors to your house unlocked.

My recommendation is you go to Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and uninstall the programs listed above (in red).

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and save to your desktop.

• Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
• At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to:
  
  Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  
• Then click Finish.
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform Full scan, then click Scan.
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
• Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Please copy and paste the log back into your next reply

NEXT Download and Run: RSIT

• Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
• Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
• Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
• Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

Please use IE

• Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button
• It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run
• When the downloads have finished, click on Settings
• Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
  • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
    Archives
    Mail databases
• Click on My Computer under Scan
• Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report
• You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As...
• Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button

hello. I was unable to finish the Kaspersky Scan. I left my computer on for the scan to finish and when I came back, my computer had crashed and the monitor displayed a blue screen telling me to restart my computer. When I restarted, I was notified by a pop-up that my computer had just experienced a "serious error". Could this be because I ran the scan while my AVG Free Edition was still active?

Everything is fine. The computer restarted fine and the scan hadn't found any infected items prior to crashing

Lets try one more, it is always a good idea before declaring the computer clean So re-directs are all gone? We will try ESET and yes, disable AVG first. To do this:-
Open the AVG8 Control Centre, by right clicking on the AVG8 icon on the task bar.

• Click on Tools
• Select Advanced
• In the left hand pane, scroll down to Resident Sheild
• In the main pain, deselect the option to Enable Resident Sheild
• To re-enable, please select Enable Resident Sheildagain.

ESET Online Scanner

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

  Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
  All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.

• Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
• Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:

  • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
• Now click on:
• The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
• When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
• Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
• When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
• Now click on:
• Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
• Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!
