I have found similar problems but since not a computer is the same and the problem wasn't exactly the same either I thought I'd give it a shot and register. If the solution is the same, this should be an easy fix.
I'm new so some guidance as to what you need is appreciated. I should be able to understand most of what you say because I'm not unfamiliar with computers. I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate SP2. As of today I am experiencing problems with google on and off. Sometimes 'google.com' redirects to a different page, which also means the built in search of firefox doesn't work, sometimes the google results don't work and give a 404 error. I am experiencing these problems with google chrome and mozilla firefox. I have already tried Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware (didn't finish the scan because I thought the problem was gone) and I ran Combofix (unsure if I did it correctly, just executed without preparation or anything). For day to day protection I use Avast Pro. I also tried a system restore but that didn't seem to improve anything.
Also, the tiny icon next to the name of a page in a tab in firefox is the same for two pages while they are unrelated. It was working before but it appeared together with these problems. While not a major problem it's not supposed to do this.

Update: It wasn't working when I started writing this post, but now it does what it's supposed to. The icons for the two pages are still the same though.
