network problem maybe caused by virus?
Hi,

I have a recent problem with my home network.I think I have a virus somewhere on computer i'm an amateur with computers but i'll tell you what i have done so far.

Host computer running windows XP SP3
desktop running Vista Home premium
2 laptops running Vista Home Premium
Netgear dg834g router
Printer attached to host computer
Norton NIS 2009 on all computers

I'm having trouble between the host computer and the desktop. I used to be able to print from desktop 9up until last week) but now when i try to send a document the printer will not print. Also the laptops cannot print anymore. The printer location cannot be found

I have tried pinging from desktop to Host computer but it timed out. I tried traceroute from desktop to host but timed out on 1,2,3,and 4.

looking at Norton (NIS2009) network security map both computers are seen on both computers.

When i try to access from either computer network sharing(view computers and devices) on desktop vista i get "windows cannot access HOMECERI error code 0x80070035

and on host xp computer under view workgroup computers i get " you might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions. Logon failure:user account restriction. Possible reasons are blank passwords not allowed, logon hour restrictions, or a policy restriction has been enforced.

All computers are showing the same workgroup.

All computers can connect to the internet

All computers have printer sharing on and it is still shown as the default printer on the desktop.

There just isn't any communication between the two computers.

We had a problem with the host computer a while back when the main user name became corrupted and we had to create a new user. This new user has administrator rights. perhaps it is all to do with this

I have just run a full system scan on both machines with system restore off.

desktop was all ok

Host computer a different story.

Found 3 viruses

trojan Horse
trojan.Horst
Trojan.Zlob

norton asked confirmation for all files to be deleted. I have done this but still no further forward with my problem.

I've run spybot and it only found two small cookies.

Computer seems to be running very slow.

Our ISP is AOL. tried to reinstall AOl software. Will not allow software to boot up after installation. Can connect to internet via IE8 (on all machines) which I've always done anyway but does look as if I have a virus on the computer which seems to have blocked all communication with it.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Smile Problem fixed
Hi,
Just to let you all know that this problem has fixed itself. Not sure what has happened but it wouldn't work for over a week and now all of a sudden today it starts working again.
All I can think of is that either Windows or Norton sent an update and now they have sent a fix.

As long as i'm back to normal I don't mind what has happened, I now have very happy kids who can print from their laptops again
