Okay, I can now boot in normal mode. I'm not sure that it's completely clean, though. McAfee won't install the virus scan (I had to uninstall it completely to run ComboFix. I couldn't stop it from doing real time scanning because of "an error" so I uninstalled it completely to be safe). I am now able to run programs so I ran the HiJackThis scan that I owed you. While it ran, this error popped up

Here's the log anyway:

That’s great you can boot in normal.

Well, since we are in normal mode hopefully we can get it clean now.

Next time you run it, (and every time you run it)RIGHT click and choose Run as administrator. You should not see that message then. It’s a Vista thing.

Lets try a new MBAM then once that is done a NEW HJT.

Please do a Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware scan using these settings:
  • • Open Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Select the Update tab
    • Click Check for Updates
    • After the update have been completed, Select the Scanner tab.
    • Make sure the "Perform full scan" option is selected.
    • Then click on the Scan button.
    • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button
    • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
    • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
    • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.

Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
    • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
    • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart your computer. (see Note below)
    • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
    • The log can also be found here:

    C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply and exit MBAM.

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Please reply with:-
  • MBAM log
  • New HJT log

Alright, I did everything as instructed. MBAM needed to restart so I did. I also ran a HJT scan. I think MBAM removed McAfee from my computer. It won't run at all. I tried uninstalling it. It appeared in the programs that you can uninstall via the control panel. But it said there was an error and it might have already been uninstalled. Also, when I try to run internet explorer, it opens two windows and freezes. The first window looks normal, the second looks like this:

The bubble is pointing to the McAfee icon at the top. So basically, I just need a way to uninstall the program completely so I can try reinstalling it. Will just sending the file to the recycle bin work? Anyway, here's the two logs. I think my computer is almost completely cured. Thank you so much for the help!

I think MBAM removed McAfee from my computer. It won't run at all
You said you uninstalled it to run Combofix?

If it is not running DO NOT surf, we don’t want infection back before we finish cleaning. Try uninstalling then run ATF then REBOOT before trying to install again.

Have a look at this Mcafee Page It might help.

Can you post me a new Uninstall list please.

Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
  • Start HijackThis
  • Click on the Config button
  • Click on the Misc Tools button
  • Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
  • Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop.

Please post this log on your next reply.

Please also run a new RSIT log. (only one will be produced this time)

Alright, I was able to do everything you told me too. McAfee is now up and working fully. The two logs are posted below. I can't see any symptoms that would indicate a virus anymore. You guys are a world of help. Thanks so much.
I am so glad all seems well. Since we have come this far it would be a shame to miss something so I would like you to update Java and run one last scan for me, to make sure we have not missed anything. Once we have the All clear on that we can remove tools, clean out quarantine folders and make a nice new system restore point.

Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 16.
  • Go to Java Site
  • Click to Download Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 16
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u16-windows-i586.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE) listed below in the code box.
    Code:
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5

  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

ESET Online Scanner

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.
  • Please go here then click on:
    Quote:
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on:
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on:
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on:
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

Please reply with:-
  • ESET log
  • New HJT log

I updated Java. I also ran the ESET scan after disabling Windows Defender, Windows Firewall, and McAfee Security Center. It found 1 infected file. Unfortunately, nothing happened after I clicked finish. It just looked like this afterward:

There was a file "Log.txt" in the exact location you described. But the only information in the file is below:

ESETSmartInstaller@High as CAB hook log:
OnlineScanner.ocx - registred OK

I don't think this is what you're looking for. But just in case it is, I ran the HJT log:

Not sure what I did wrong with the ESET scan to not produce a logfile.

Have another look C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. after you have closed the ESET application.

I don’t suppose you remember what is was?

There is a very good chance that is was just a quarantined file it flagged, but unfortunately I cannot be sure since I have not seen it.

We can continue our clean of tools if you feel confident the computer is working fine, or do another online scan, maybe try Kaspersky.

HJT looked good.

Kaspersky Online Scan
Do an online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As...
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button
  • Please post this log in your next reply

Let me know what you decide.

I ran the ESET scan again and was able to open the infected files list. The only infected file is here:

C:\Qoobox\Quarantine\C\Windows\System32\ESQULwhmryijuyseqowoovmosnrrgfbyprw xh.dll.vir Win32/TrojanClicker.Agent.NGF trojan

It's still there since I haven't given it the command to delete it. Shall I delete it?

If you are not having any further problems, I would suggest you proceed as follows.

MBAM and ATF are great tools for you to keep and use on a regular basis.

You can delete RSIT from your Desktop and it associated folder C:\RSIT, also Rootrepeal and any folders.

Remove Combofix
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK ( please note the space between Combofix and the /)
The above procedure will reset your System Restore and clear out the backups and quarantines created during the course of this fix.

Now that the infection is gone lets try to keep it that way by following the below recommendations.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

One last problem. I tried to remove combofix using your instructions, but this error popped up:

I can't find Combofix on my desktop, nor can I find it searching my computer. I don't know what happened to it. Other than that, my computer works fine.
