Computer shuts down when scanning with AVG

A few days ago I clicked on a bad link and I think I have a virus now. I've tried scanning my computer twice with AVG and once Malwarebytes. But my computer shuts down everytime I scan with AVG. I then tried scanning in safe mode with AVG and it says there's no infections but when I tried scanning regularly again today with AVG it shut off again. I tried system restore once and it said it couldn't restore the computer. I tried system recovery before that but my computer can't find the files to start system recovery and my CD discs won't load either; the computer thinks they're picture files.

I have a HP Pavilion dv5000 laptop with Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002.

To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:

Start HijackThis
Click on the Config button
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Save the file to your desktop.

Hi there, The HJT log you posted is not complete can you please post the full log.

You are running AVG8, but there is leftovers from Symantec. Please go to add/remove programs and uninstall the following.

Remove Norton

Lets get rid of the Norton remnants

Please go to this -page- and select the product you had

1 Download the Norton Removal Tool.
Save the file to the Windows desktop.
2 On the Windows desktop, double-click the Norton Removal Tool icon.
3 Follow the on-screen instructions.
Your computer may be restarted more than once, and you may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts.

Download and run Combofix
This tool is not a toy and not for everyday use.

With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.

**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it will produce a log for you. Please include the C:\ComboFix.txt in your next reply along with a fresh HijackThis log.

Hey there, I feel sheepish for saying this but I'm not sure what year of Norton I originally had. I bought this computer either in 2005 or 2006. Is there a specific way I can check which year I had? I downloaded and ran the removal tool for 2004/2005 but after I already began running it I started having doubts.

Do you use or did you by choice install the Ask & Record Toolbar 4.00. If not, please go to add/remove programs and uninstall. While there also uninstall Viewpoint.

They are both optional fixes, so the choice is yours.

Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 16.

Go to Java Site
Click to Download Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 16
In Platform box choose Windows.
Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u16-windows-i586.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE) listed below in the code box.

Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 9.
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Kaspersky Online Scan
Do an online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<

Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button
It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run
When the downloads have finished, click on Settings
Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
- Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
  Archives
  Mail databases
Click on My Computer under Scan
Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report
You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As...
Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button

ESET Online Scanner

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.

Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!
