XP issues
I'm having some computer issues, I believe that maybe something in the registry has been changed or something crucial has been deleted.

The obvious change is that the start bar seems to be missing, as I cannot access it. The computer believes there to be no network connections and I am unable to open programs that usually come with Windows, eg Windows media player. I am unable to uninstall several programs and updates including ad aware (which doesn't actually exist in my program files but still appears on my add/remove programs) and AVG. Avg opens, but will not scan my system. when I try to end the avg processes in task manager they just restart.

I have tried to system restore but it tells me it is unable to protect my computer and I should restart. I am currently abroad and do not have the CDs to reinstall Windows. can I fix this without it?

I currently have very limited internet so expect responses to be slow. but I do hope you can help me solve this issue.

Thank you for your time
