I just built a brand new system a couple months ago using a Rampage Extreme and a Q9650 Quad Core and XP Pro Service Pack 2. It has 2MB of RAM with an ASUS HD4890 video card. I have a bunch of games installed and some graphic utilities but not much more than that. It's mostly used for gaming and graphics. I installed AVAST home edition immediately after the first start up. Configured the system to Classic mode and patched everything up. It has two SATA2.0 320GB drives.

I have this very annoying problem. I have 2 other computers running XP Pro and none do this. I get a constant hard drive led flashing about once a second. I've installed and run "Process Explorer" and slowly went through all and suspended them and it keeps running. I ran an AVAST scan and nothing came up.

I do browse the internet frequently with this computer and I'm concerned that I picked up a trojan program and just can't detect it. I'm afraid of what it may be doing to my system. I need some help if someone can give it to me. I want to find out what is accessing the hard drive and remove it or shut it off.

First of all, I'm going to assume 2MB of RAM is a typo and you meant 2GB...

If you suspect you have some kind of malware, I suggest you download and install the two following free programs. Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware. These two programs will find it if you have it. You can remove anything either program finds. Good programs to have whether you think you have malware or not. Be sure to update them during the install process and periodically after that. I run daily updates on both.

Nope, didn't work. The LED is still flashing and I ran both programs at full scan after installing and letting them update. SuperAntiSpyware found 3 tracking cookies but they weren't the problem.

I'm re-posting this because it got moved to another section and got buried pretty much. I did try Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware upon raybro's suggestion but it didn't find any malware.

I desperately need help with this now. Whatever it is is screwing up my system. It hangs when I try to shut down now. If I can't get help in the next day or two I'm going to have to wipe the drive clean and just do a complete re-install of everything.

Thanks for getting back to me. I assume that you mean go into the MSCONFIG and use "diagnostic startup", is that correct? The LED still flashes the same way when I do this. Is there another way to go into safe mode. I tried F8 but it only gives me boot drive options.

No, you should use F8. What boot drive options are you offerred?

I have two different hard drives, one for the OS and applications and the other for data. They're both from the same manufacturing batch. I use standard settings, no RAID. This is the order they show up in the list.

1. Floppy Drive
2. SATA PM Hitachi 320GB Primary
3. SATA SM Hitachi 320GB Secondary
4. Sony DVD ROM
5. Sony DVD Writer

It sounds like you're hitting F8 too soon. It has to be at the end of POST and before Windows loads. See if you can get it that way.

I got it. It posts so fast now it was hard to get it to go to the selective startup screen.

Yes, the LED still flashes in safe mode. About once a second, maybe slightly faster.
