Format did not work

I have a major slowdown and suspect a Trojan virus on my computer. I have frequent crashes, new tabs opening constantly, slow boots and sometimes multiple clicks of a mouse and sometimes one click to open files. I have downloaded Hijackthis vs 202. Any help would be great.

I see RegCure in your list of running processes. Hopefully, you're still using the trial version and haven't been suckered into buying the full version. Get rid of it. Never ever install and use a registry cleaner/booster/optimizer program, no matter what it claims it can do.

Also get rid of Windows Defender. There are a couple of anti-spyware/anti-malware programs that do a better job and which are well recommended in these forums which I'll discuss with you later.

I'll assist you with the startup load and some other things after Cookiegal is done with you.

Regcure is now gone and so is Windows Defender. I actually downloaded WD today after reading one of the other Tech's notes to do so in someone elses file that was similar to mine. Anyway, they are gone and I will wait for the next instruction.

Mike:

You appear to have both McAfee VirusScan and Symantec Norton installed and running in the background at the same time.

You don't ever want to have 2 or more anti-virus programs installed and running at the same time. They'll fight with each other, they'll bog down your computer, and it'll make your computer more susceptible to infection.

You need to decide which one to uninstall. Both of them have removal tools to make the uninstall process more thorough.

McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool 2.0.155.1

Norton Removal Tool 2010.0.0.98

Just download and save both tools for now. Don't do anything with them yet until you hear from Cookiegal.

Please visit Combofix Guide & Instructions for instructions for installing the recovery console and downloading and running ComboFix.

The only thing different from the instructions there is that when downloading and saving the ComboFix.exe I would like you to rename it to puppy.exe please.

Post the log from ComboFix when you've accomplished that along with a new HijackThis log.

Important notes regarding ComboFix:

ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser. This can easily be changed once we're finished.

ComboFix also prevents autorun of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you, please let me know. This can be undone manually when we're finished. Read HERE for an article written by dvk01 on why we disable autoruns.
