| HP Recovery Hi Guys, I've spent most of the week trying to cure a problem with programs shutting down - for details see this thread http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt...ml#post6981953 I have just about given up (the will to live) on ever getting it sorted so now I am thinking of using the HP recovery option on the laptop. HP says that I can re-install XP without losing my programs and data - can this be true? I have most of my original program installation disks but some programs were paid for downloads and others are pretty old (but essential) programs no longer available. Has anyone else used HP's recovery system successfully? |

| Tacpot: I've copied your HijackThis log from your previous thread to this thread so I can discuss it with you. Doing a HP recovery and taking the risk of it going wrong and losing all your personal data and paid programs isn't what's needed here. What's needed is not having so much crap installed and not having such a bloated startup load. I suggest that you browse through your "Add Or Remove Programs" list and decide what you really don't need or use, then uninstall it. Can you advise what peripherals(printer, scanner, camera, webcam, iPod, etc.) you use or have connected to your computer? Who is your Internet Service Provider, and do you use a wired or wireless connection? Quote:

| Thanks for your comments. The "bloated startup" is a consequences of selecting a "normal" startup in my msconfig. My original tactic was to reduce the number of items in startup to hopefully avoid some possible conflict that was causing my problem. When that didn't work I thought maybe I had turned off something essential so I turned everything back on. I have restricted the number of items in startup again. I have not installed any new programs recently - do you think it would be helpful to remove programs that have been working without any problems up until now? |

They're more user-friendly, they do a better job, and they're well recommended and frequently used in these forums. If you do decide to install and use them, make sure to run their update function to get the definition files up-to-date before doing a scan with them and fixing what they find. ---------------------------------------------------------------- |

| Sorry about the long gaps between posts. I have followed all your instructions and my laptop is rebooting a lot faster, just as well 'cos there's been a lot of rebooting! SuperAntiSpyware managed to identify and destroy quite a few items including this: Stolen.data folder in C:\Windows\System32\xmldm However this seems to have recreated itself and SuperAntiSpyware is now missing it or ignoring it. I also noticed another folder with an eye-catching name; Windows\System32\**** (**** is c*ck where *=o ) This had several txt files in it which I have deleted as well as the folder. Here is my latest Hijack This log: Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 16:36:26, on 23/10/2009 Platform: Windows XP SP3 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v8.00 (8.00.6001.18702) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSvcHst.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\CCPD-LC\symlcsvc.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe c:\program files\synaptics\syntp\syntpenh.exe c:\program files\hpq\hp wireless assistant\hp wireless assistant.exe c:\windows\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3\hpztsb09.exe c:\program files\common files\symantec shared\ccapp.exe c:\windows\system32\ctfmon.exe c:\program files\belkin\belkin 802.11g wireless card configuration utility\utility.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Search Enhancement Pack\SeaPort\SeaPort.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\TomTom HOME 2\TomTomHOMEService.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Windows Live\WLIDSVC.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\SearchIndexer.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Windows Live\WLIDSvcM.exe c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe c:\program files\windows live\toolbar\wltuser.exe c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\SearchProtocolHost.exe c:\program files\trend micro\hijackthis\hijackthis.exe R1 - | I see you kept Spybot and didn't get rid of it. -------------------------------------------------------------- Copy-and-paste the scan logs here for Malwarebytes and SUPERAntiSpyware. For Malwarebytes, go into Logs(tab) to get it. For SUPERAntiSpyware, go into Preferences - Statistics/Logs(tab) to get it. --------------------------------------------------------------- |
