a big paperweight
I am trying to save this pc for a friend but I think it may be beyond hope. It is a Dell dimension 3000 running windows XP Home. When I first turned it on it was very slow, i disabled a couple of memory hogs. This speeded it up to closer to a managable speed. I tried to run HiJack This on it but it would run and start to populate the list of results and stop and disappear. After this every time I try to open HiJack This again it tells me that I don't have permision to use this program. I tried to do a scan with AVG and I can get into far enough to click the scan pc button but when I click on it nothing happens. I talked to the owner and they said all they wanted off the pc was their pictures and their taxes. I thought I would just burn these files to a cd and format the pc but whenI right click on the pictures and tried to send to cd drive nothing happens. I tried to copy and paste the files but the paste feature cannot be selected. I also tried to a system restore and it said that system restore could not protect my pc to restart the system and try again. Any ideas what to try next??

Please download and run the following tool to help allow other programs to run. (courtesy of BleepingComputer.com)
There are 4 different versions. If one of them won't run then download and try to run the other one.
Vista and Win7 users need to right click and choose Run as Admin
You only need to get one of them to run, not all of them.
  1. rkill.exe
  2. rkill.com
  3. rkill.scr
  4. rkill.pif

Now try to run hijackthis and post the log but don't fix anything!

Download OTS.exe to your Desktop and double-click on it to extract the files. It will create a folder named OTS on your desktop.
  1. Close any open browsers.
  2. If your Real protection or Antivirus intervenes with OTS, allow it to run.
  3. Open the OTS folder and double-click on OTS.exe to start the program.
  4. In Additional Scans section put a check in Disabled MS Config Items and EventViewer logs
  5. Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  6. The program will be scanning huge amounts of data so depending on your system it could take a long time to complete. Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  7. When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  8. Save that notepad file
Use the Reply button, scroll down to the attachments section and attach the notepad file here.

The fix should only take a very short time. When the fix is completed a message box will popup telling you that it is finished. Click the Ok button and Notepad will open with a log of actions taken during the fix.
Post that information back here.

I will review the information when it comes back in.
