As for how my computer is running, speed-wise there doesn't seem to be much of a difference, but that was never really the problem, as far as I know. The pop-ups and internet re-directs were, and they happened when I opened my browser. I've been all over websites for a while just now, and haven't seen any pop-ups or re-directs, so that's great. Thank you!

Nevertheless, the last time Combofix scanned, it still stated that it detected rootkit activity and needed to reboot. I'm not sure if that implies that there is still a problem.

Here is the new HJT log:

Ok looking pretty good. You have remnants of Symantec on your machine. I would suggest running their uninstaller.
First go to ADD/remove programs and uninstall:-
  • LiveUpdate 1.80 (Symantec Corporation)

Then download the Norton Removal Tool.
Save the file to the Windows desktop.
2 On the Windows desktop, double-click the Norton Removal Tool icon.
3 Follow the on-screen instructions.
Your computer may be restarted more than once, and you may be asked to repeat some steps after the computer restarts. [/list]
I also recommend uninstalling Viewpoint Media Player while in add/remove programs.

Update Java Runtime

You are using an old version of Java. Sun's Java is sometimes updated in order to eliminate the exploitation of vulnerabilities in an existing version. For this reason, it's extremely important that you keep the program up to date, and also remove the older more vulnerable versions from your system. The most current version of Sun Java is: Java Runtime Environment Version 6 Update 16.
  • Go to Java Site
  • Click to Download Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 16
  • In Platform box choose Windows.
  • Check the box to Accept License Agreement and click Continue.
  • Click on Windows Offline Installation, click on the link under it which says "jre-6u16-windows-i586.exe" and save the downloaded file to your desktop.
  • Go to Start => Control Panel => Add or Remove Programs
  • Uninstall all old versions of Java (Java 3 Runtime Environment, JRE or JSE) listed below in the code box.
    Code:
    J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 7
Java 2 Runtime Environment, SE v1.4.2_03
    Java(TM) 6 Update 11
    Java(TM) 6 Update 2
    Java(TM) 6 Update 5
    Java(TM) 6 Update 7

  • Install the new version by running the newly-downloaded file with the java icon which will be at your desktop, and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reboot your computer

Update Adobe Reader
Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version. Adobe Reader 9.
You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.

Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.
Make sure that all browser windows are closed.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser,To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Kaspersky Online Scan
Do an online scan with >Kaspersky Online Scanner<
  • Read through the requirements and privacy statement and click on Accept button
  • It will start downloading and installing the scanner and virus definitions. You will be prompted to install an application from Kaspersky. Click Run
  • When the downloads have finished, click on Settings
  • Make sure these boxes are checked (ticked). If they are not, please tick them and click on the Save button:
    • Spyware, Adware, Dialers, and other potentially dangerous programs
      Archives
      Mail databases
  • Click on My Computer under Scan
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display the results. Click on View Scan Report
  • You will see a list of infected items there. Click on Save Report As...
  • Save this report to a convenient place. Change the Files of type to Text file (.txt) before clicking on the Save button
  • Please post this log in your next reply

Please reply with:-
  • Kaspersky report
  • New HJT log

So I got held up tonight but now I'm passing out, and Kaspersky has been updating the database for half an hour now, and shows no signs of quitting.

I've done everything except the Kaspersky scan, I will do it first thing when I wake up.

Well its been scanning for an hour now, and it says its 5% done. I really hope the scan doesn't take 20 hours, but I'm going to leave it on for the day and hope it finishes soon.

Sorry for the delay, figured it wouldn't take this long

Sorry for all the ridiculous waiting and delays, I'll get on everything at one point and way faster in the future.

The scan took 5 hours, and it did find some stuff, mostly in what appears to be a quaratine folder, but its probably fake. At certain points when I leave my computer on but not in use, AVG is still detecting "Vundo.IO" or things of that nature.

In any case here is the Kaspersky log:

It is not a problem at all. Only problem is if you are gone for more than 3 days without advising me. Other than that all is good, I do not expect instant answers, so don’t worry about it.

That’s ok, it will be finding it in one of the quarantine folders that we will clean up when we finish.

Please let me know if you are still having problems, if not we shall move on to the last steps.

Open Hijack This and select Do a System Scan Only place a check next to the below lines if still present
  • O23 - Service: Remote Packet Capture Protocol v.0 (experimental) (rpcapd) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\WinPcap\rpcapd.exe (file missing)

Once selected close all windows except HJT an click on Fix Checked

Please reply with update on how computer is behaving?

Thanks for understanding!

I fixed the HJT line.

My computer seems to be doing fine, besides for the sporadic AVG warnings, which happen less frequently since I've done the last few steps. Pop-ups and redirects also pretty much do not happen anymore. General performance seems to be alright, a little bit sluggish at times but I don't think any more than usual.

Well I think we are good to go! Once we clean up I am sure AVG won’t be warning you anymore. If it does you can post back and let me know.

The following might help the sluggishness:-

This next step is your choice. The below items I am getting you to fix with HJT are for programs that do not need to start up when you turn your computer on. Doing the below step WILL NOT UNINSTALL these programs ONLY stop them from running at startup. All will be available when you need them. The bonus is it will make your startup time a bit shorter

Open Hijack This and select Do a System Scan Only place a check next to the below lines if still present
  • O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SigmatelSysTrayApp] stsystra.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSScheduler] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\issch.exe" -start
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ISUSPM Startup] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\UpdateService\isuspm.exe" -startup
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Broadcom Wireless Manager UI] C:\WINDOWS\system32\WLTRAY.exe
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ATICCC] "C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI.ACE\cli.exe" runtime -Delay
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\Program Files\QuickTime\QTTask.exe" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre6\bin\jusched.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 9.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe"
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe ARM] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM.exe"

Once selected close all windows except HJT an click on Fix Checked

Other than that I would suggest you proceed as follows.

MBAM and ATF are great tools for you to keep and use on a regular basis.

Remove Combofix
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK ( please note the space between Combofix and the /, it is needed.)
The above procedure will reset your System Restore and clear out the backups and quarantines created during the course of this fix.

Now that the infection is gone lets try to keep it that way by following the below recommendations.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
