Hi, I was hoping someone might be able to help me. Ive tried to get rid of this nasty myself but without any success. win32.virut.cf is causing pop ups etc and I cant enter safe mode on startup to remove it. I have a symantec removal tool but need to be in safe mode to use it. When I click into safe mode on start up in XP it starts to log into safe mode but then the blue screen of death comes up. This happens every time. From my internet research the longer you leave this malware the worse it gets and it hides everywhere on your system. I'd really appreciate it if someone was able to help me. I'm at a loss

An update, xp became inoperable and I was getting blue screen at start up so I had to reload xp. I'm not confident that that is going to solve my virus problem

Here is some information on Virut

Virut is a file infecting virus which is able to modify itself each and every time it runs. In addition, when it infects, sometimes it will destroy the file it tries to latch onto.
For these reasons, you really can't truly fix Virut. You will need to format/reinstall the operating system on this machine.

There are bugs in the viral code. When the virus produces infected files, it also creates non-functional files that also contain the virus.

W32/Virut.h is a polymorphic, entry point obscuring (EPO) file infector with IRC bot functionality. It can accept commands to download other malware on the compromised machine.
It appends to the end of the last section of executable (PE) files an encrypted copy of its code. The decryptor is polymorphic and can be located either:
Immediately before the encrypted code at the end of the last section
At the end of the code section of the infected host in 'slack-space' (assuming there is any)
At the original entry point of the host (overwriting the original host code)

Miekiemoes, an expert for malware removal, and an MS-MVP, additionally has a blog post about Virut.

I suggest you to start backup all of your valuable data/documents/pictures/movies/songs/etc..
Do NOT backup any applications/installers and Do NOT backup any .exe/.scr/.htm/.html/.xml/.zip/.rar files...
This because these files may be infected as well. If you back them up and replace them afterwards, it will infect your computer again.

Thanks for the reply. I have just reinstalled windows which I managed to work out how to do. I'm afraid I'm one of those in computer world who know just enough to be dangerous and cause more issues for myself. I'm just running Norton 2009 with a full system scan now to see if anything is still being picked up as it was before and will let you know. I have read a bit and with my limited knowledge it does sound nasty. If it comes up could I post another log to see if someone knows how to deal? I would need a walkthrough. Is reloading windows the same as reformating? My vital stuff is stored on a detachable hard drive.

The disk will need formatted, basically wiped clean of everything. Then the Operating system reinstalled.

I think I might have ridded myself of virut. I found a post that suggested using safe mode scanning with symantecs virut removal tool then scanning with DR. Web CureIt scanner then using ATF cleaner. There was a heap of stuff there but now it seems to be ok (fingers crossed). I really appreciate your help. Thanks mate.

Sooner than thought. The good news is that Virut hasnt come back...the bad news is that Norton 2009 is picking up a lot of malware all of a sudden. Downloader detected but auto protected, W32 SillyIM detected by auto protect. Trojan adclicker detected and quarantined. These werent there a day ago. Help!

The only help I can offer is what I already gave you. A full R&R is needed. In the long run it will be quicker, you could spend days/weeks cleaning only to find more malware as too many system changes have been made, and we would never find them all.

This is a quote from an expert!

Even after running a removal tool, the nature of the infection means that you cannot guarantee that it has been fully removed. There could very well be files on your computer that are still infected but haven't yet been run. When they are, the infection will become active again and infect more files and so on.

The second is that any files that have been disinfected are damaged beyond repair, and they will need to be replaced. If they are system files the best way to do this is to reformat and reinstall to ensure that not only is the PC clean but also working correctly.

You are free to ignore this advice, but it is the best I can give, and it is what I would do with this system if I owned it.

I hope that explanation helps to clarify why Virut is such an ugly dangerous infection, and explains why a reformat and reinstall should be done. As miekiemoes pointed out, it makes no sense to spend weeks trying to clean up this infection, while the infected computer continues spreading its infection about... especially when you consider that in the end the R&R almost always must be done.

Yes you just installed on top of every thing. Have a read through the link below, it might be all you need. Otherwise post for help in the XP forum, those folk are great and will be able to help you better than myself.

Again sorry for the bad news. If I knew a sure fire fix, I would certainly offer it to you.

Thanks. What I think I did wrong first time around was to not choose the nfts file system but to choose the leave current file system intact option. Duh! makes sense now. I'll do the R and R now.
