I am trying to create the Book scan CD's from the BitDefender and Kapersky .ISO files. When I put them into the problematic PC though, the PC does not boot up from the CD even though I have the boot setup changed to look to the CD drive first.

Any suggestions?

does it ask you to boot from cd???

Did you use isorecorder to burn the .iso?

I did use isorecorder to make the CDs.

When I have my Windows XP boot disk in the computer, it prompts me to press a key to boot from CD. So, I know it is setup to boot to the CD drive first.

However, when I put the BitDefender Rescue CD in or the Kapersky Rescue CD in and boot up the computer I do not get the option to "Press a key to boot from CD". It just boots to Windows XP.

Thanks.

okay then the cd wasn't burned correctly.

With isorecorder all you have to do right-click on the kaspersky.iso and choose burn image to cd. How did you do it?

That's exactly how I burned the CD. Any other suggestions?

Could of been a bad burn, I would try again and double-check the boot sequence.

OK. Here's what I have found out now.

1. The boot sequence is correct. It does try the CD/DVD drive first. Has been confirmed by checking the boot sequence and also by booting to the Windows XP disc.

2. Have reburned the image. However, when I place it into the D: drive [CD/DVD drive] on the infected computer it will not boot from it. In fact, that drive won't read it at all. This is true for both BitDefender and Kapersky.

3. As a trial ... I put the CD into the E: drive [CD-RW drive] on the infected computer. It sees the contents on the disc fine in both cases --- Kapersky and BitDefender.

I did not locate anything in the setup to be able to boot to the E: drive. Is there a way to do this? Or do you know of any other reason why the CD/DVD drive wouldn't be able to read the CD discs?

I tried to burn the .ISO image to a DVD, but the burning program wouldn't allow it.

Suggestions?

Well ... since I couldn't get the boot scan CDs to work I ended up just doing a restore back to the factory image. So far, so good.

It's my parents computer so I am now looking for any good spyware/malware protection software ideas. They have Symantec for viruses, but it's usually the spyware/malware that causes these problems. Looking for something that can be installed and setup to scan automatically. Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for all your assistance. This is a wonderful forum!

I really like malwarebytes and purchasing a license would give you access to the protection module.
