Personal Guard 2009 virus??
My computer recently did some automatic windows updates, afterwhich I began having a very annoying problem. For some time I've been using AVG as my security solution with no problems and I'm content to continue to do so. Consequently I had disabled the virus protection component in Windows Security Center and this has not been a problem until this most recent update, which has apparently installed a "trial version" of a very annoying and persistent thing called "Personal Guard 2009", which is apparently the Microsoft virus protection software, or so it claims to be.

I see in All Programs under my start menu that this "new program" has been installed, which is unusual for a typical windows update. In any case, I have tried repeatedly now to uninstall this ******* of a program and it appears to uninstall, only to reappear, or reinstall itself a few seconds later. Also very annoying is that this program continually throws pop ups at me saying "warning, Windows Security Center notes that your version of Personal Guard 2009 is not active. Please activate immediatly to protect your computer". Of course it comes down to me having to go pay for this piece of crap that has invaded my system.

It would appear to me that a virus has invaded my Windows Security Center. I would certainly hope that this is not Microsofts doing. HHHHEEEEELLLLLPPPPP! How can I get rid of Personal Guard 2009???

Oh, I'm also getting random pop up windows advertising anything from vacations in Asia to security software, as this all has happened at once I'm assuming they're related. Don't know though.

Help appreciated!!

Kenny:

Disabling your antivirus program in the Security Center wasn't a good idea at all.

You've allowed a rogue security program to be installed in your computer.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Go here and click the green icon to download HijackThis 2.0.2.

Close all open windows, then install it in its default location: C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis.

Run a scan with it - which will take 30 seconds or less.

Save the resulting log in Notepad.

Return here, then copy-and-paste the entire log here.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Here is some information about Personal Guard 2009:

Personal Guard 2009 is a misleading security application that reports false or exaggerated system security threats and displays fake security alerts to make you think your computer is infected with spyware, Trojans, adware and other malicious software. The bogus program can be manually installed or enter the system secretly with the help of Trojan viruses. When active, the misleading application will prompt you to pay for a full version of the program to remove computer threats which do not even exist. Please uninstall Personal Guard 2009 from your PC upon detection.

Most if the time, PersonalGuard2009 is promoted through the use of Trojans, fake online anti-malware scanners. However, it can be downloaded and manually installed from personalguard2009.com. Do not install this program. It's nothing more but a scam. Once installed, Personal Guard 2009 will be automatically configured to scan your computer each time you log on into Windows. It will then display a list of computer threats and infections. However, the scan results are false, so you can easily ignore them. Furthermore, this parasite will constantly display fake security alerts and notifications form Windows task bar. Personal Guard 2009 will also impersonate Windows Security Center and state that your antivirus software is disabled.

What is more, the bogus program will block antivirus software and certain security websites.

Yes, it's definitely a fake version of Windows Security Center, which is now living in my taskbar, sending me continual pop ups and warnings and I have not been able to uninstall it, either using the "uninstall" icon in the programs menu, or by going through the control panel. It did appear to uninstall, but then would keep reinstalling itself.

Here is the Hijackthis report:

Kenny:

Your computer is definitely infected. I've reported your thread to the "Malware Removal & HijackThis Logs" section for assistance by a yellow shield malware expert. It's a pretty busy section, so it may be awhile before you get a reply from there.

Download these programs(click the green icon at each site):

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.41

SUPERAntiSpyware 4.29.0.1004

Just save them for now and don't install them nor do anything with them yet.

Uninstall these programs:

Adware Alert

Windows Defender

Are you using the pay version or the free version of AVG 8? If you're not aware, AVG 9 has been out for a few weeks.

I'm using the free AVG8, and I did a system scan with it a bit ago and it reported no infections, despite my system being obviously infected.

I've downloaded the files you recommended and I'll now uninstall the ones you mentioned, and await further instructions.

Thank you for your help.

I couldn't tell for sure from your HijackThis log if you have the pay version or the free version.

Since you've confirmed that you have the free version, click the green icon here to download AVG Free Edition 9.0.698.

Download it and save it, close all open windows, then install it. It'll overwrite and replace AVG 8, so don't uninstall it first.

Decline to install the AVG toolbar and the Yahoo search engine crap. Restart when prompted to.

After you restart, you'll be asked to run an optimized scan. Decline to do so. It's not needed and it'll tie up your computer for several minutes.

After all that is done, post a new HijackThis log here. We need to keep an updated log going.

Holy Cow, what a day! I was in the middle of doing what you recommended and my internet access froze up. I was using a Sprint Broadband connection and after a few hours trying to make it work again, uninstalling, reinstalling over and over, I finally just went and bought a wireless router and tapped into the main modem in the office, so I'm back online now finally.

I've done everything you said, I'm now updated to AVG 9 and here is the current hijack log:

btw, just before I upgraded to AVG 9, my old version popped up with a screen identifying two trojan viruses which I vaulted. After that I was able to uninstall Personal Guard 2009 without it automatically reinstalling itself. So that problem seemed to go away, only to be replaced by my internet freezing up. I don't know if it's all clear now or not.... but I'm back online and I don't see Personal Guard anywhere, and no annoying popups, can I assume the coast is clear?

Your computer is still infected, and there's other work that needs to be done, so don't be so quick to want to close this thread and assume the problem is solved.

Your thread has been moved into the "Malware Removal & HijackThis Logs" section, so hopefully you'll be contacted soon by a yellow shield malware expert.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

If you've uninstalled AdwareAlert and Windows Defender, go into the C:\Program Files folder and see if their folders are gone. If they're still there, delete them.

I uninstalled Windows Defender and there appears to be no trace of it remaining. Adware alert I could not and cannot see anywhere, in program files or in my "add/remove programs" window. If it's there it's hiding.

I have the other programs you told me to download but not install yet, Super anti spyware and the Malwarebytes antimalware.

OK, I appreciate your help. My computer is still definitely ill and it appears to be something that AVG is not able to handle. Waiting patiently, thank you.

Let's give it another 24 hours for a malware expert to reply, then we'll go from there.

In the meantime, let's see what's installed in your computer.

----------------------------------------------------------------

Open HijackThis.

Click on the "Open The Misc Tools Section" button.

Click on the "Open Uninstall Manager" button.

Click the "Save List" button.

Save the "uninstall_list.txt" file somewhere. It'll then open in Notepad.

Return here to your thread, then copy-and-paste the entire file here.

Hello there
My name is NeonFx. I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems. Logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me.

Please note the following:

  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used on this machine.
  • Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine appears to be clean. Absence of symptoms does not necessarily mean that the system is completely clean.
  • It's often worth reading through these instructions and printing them for ease of reference. I may ask you to boot into Safe Mode where you will be unable to follow my instructions online.
  • If you don't know or understand something, please don't hesitate to say or ask!! It's better to be sure and safe than sorry.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.

Step 1

Download OTS to your Desktop

  • Close ALL OTHER PROGRAMS.
  • Double-click on OTS.exe to start the program.
  • Check the box that says Scan All Users
  • Under Additional Scans check the following:
    • Reg - Desktop Components
    • Reg - Disabled MS Config Items
    • Reg - NetSvcs
    • Reg - Shell Spawning
    • Reg - Uninstall List
    • File - Lop Check
    • File - Purity Scan
    • Evnt - EvtViewer (last 10)

  • Now click the Run Scan button on the toolbar.
  • Let it run unhindered until it finishes.
  • When the scan is complete Notepad will open with the report file loaded in it.
  • Click the Format menu and make sure that Wordwrap is not checked. If it is then click on it to uncheck it.

Please attach the log in your next post. To do so click on the blue "Reply" button or "Go Advanced" and click on the "Manage Attachments" button

To ensure that I get all the information this log will need to be attached. If it is too large to attach then upload it to Dropio and post the sharing link/url (The Drop's URL will be similar to : http:://drop.io/daerk)

Step 2

Download RootRepeal from one of the following locations and save it to your desktop:
Link 1
Link 2
Link 3
  • Double click to start the program
  • Click on the Report tab at the bottom of the program window
  • Click the button

Step 2
I've completed step 2 but I had some weirdness that I don't understand fully. I have 2 drives on my laptop, which is a recording studio pc, the system C drive and an audio drive D. When I ran rootrepeal it asked me which drive to scan so I selected both. Then when I saw the report, I only saw D drive so I thought something was wrong so I tried to open rootrepeal again and got an error message which I've also attached to this post, called "log". I then redownloaded rootrepeal and ran it again scanning only C drive, hence the second report. So attached to this post are the first report, the error message, and the second time round report. Sorry for the mess....
