I really appreciate you taking time out to help me with this problem. I really can't thank you enough.
Not a problem, keeps my mind active!

Do you know of a good program that i can monitor startup processes with? There were 99-105 running at startup before your help. Now there are only 49 & I would love to keep it that way.
One of the things I will recommend in my last post is Winpatrol. That might be what you need.

My mother has the same problems that I have been having on her PC, could you help with that PC or would I have to start a new thread? Hers is actually alot slower than mine was. I was wondering if you could help & I could just post in this same thread?
It would be better to start a new thread. You can let me know the link when posted and I will have a look.

Before we finish I would like you to run an online scan. This is like a checkup to make sure I have missed nothing. It will take a while.

ESET Online Scanner

Note: You can use either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox for this scan. You will however need to disable your current installed Anti-Virus, how to do so can be read here.

Vista users: You will need to to right-click on the either the IE or FF icon in the Start Menu or Quick Launch Bar on the Taskbar and select Run as Administrator from the context menu.
  • Please go here then click on:
    Quote:
Note: If using Mozilla Firefox you will need to download esetsmartinstaller_enu.exe when prompted then double click on it to install.
All of the below instructions are compatible with either Internet Explorer or Mozilla FireFox.
  • Select the option YES, I accept the Terms of Use then click on:
  • When prompted allow the Add-On/Active X to install.
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is NOT checked, and the option Scan archives is checked.
  • Now click on Advanced Settings and select the following:
    • Scan for potentially unwanted applications
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth Technology
  • Now click on:
  • The virus signature database... will begin to download. Be patient this make take some time depending on the speed of your Internet Connection.
  • When completed the Online Scan will begin automatically.
  • Do not touch either the Mouse or keyboard during the scan otherwise it may stall.
  • When completed select Uninstall application on close if you so wish, make sure you copy the logfile first!
  • Now click on:
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\ESET\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt.
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.
Note: Do not forget to re-enable your Anti-Virus application after running the above scan!

Please reply with:-
  • ESET log
  • New HJT log

New Logs
Hi Mupp - I am very sorry it took me so long to get back to this. I was out of town for Thanksgiving holidays. I hope that you have been well. I have listed the logs below. The machine is running great since your help. Again, I cannot thank you enough, you are a life saver. Should I run any of these scans regularly such as OTM scan? Any last steps or programs I should download to ensure that this doesn't happen again? Thank you for everything.

That is what I like to hear. So no problems?

One program that I use and love is ATF Cleaner (download link below). It is small, fast and removes all those pesky temp files in one go. It can be used whenever you like.

Download and Run ATF Cleaner
Download ATF (Atribune Temp File) Cleaner© by Atribune to your desktop.
Make sure that all browser windows are closed.
  • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser,To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

If you are not having any further problems, I would suggest you proceed as follows.

MBAM and ATF are great tools for you to keep and use on a regular basis.

You can delete Security Application Check

Remove Combofix
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK ( please note the space between Combofix and the /,it is needed)
The above procedure will reset your System Restore and clear out the backups and quarantines created during the course of this fix.

Let's clear out the programs we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.
  • Double-click OTM.exe. (Vista users, please right click on OTM.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

Now that the infection is gone lets try to keep it that way by following the below recommendations.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

Questions
Hi Mupp - Again, so many thanks. I cannot begin to express my gratitude over the interwebz!! My PC is running great. I do have a few questions if you don't mind.

When I removed the OTM.exe program per your instructions & the PC rebooted, I noticed that Winamp agent & HP ToolboxFX ran at startup once again, which is something that i definitely do not need or want to happen. How can I fix this from happening in the future? I am thinking with Winpatrol, however, I wanted to ask to be sure.

Also, should i remove the ESET scanner?

I only use Firefox now. Is there something that I need to do that is equivalent to this step or does this not apply with Firefox?

I ran the Secunia freescan & have two questions about it:

1) It says that I can upgrade to Secunia PSI (free for home users) if i was happy with the OSI. Is this something I should do or should I just use the OSI every week or two?

2) Sorry if this is a little off subject. After the completion of the scan there were 2 programs that neeed updating. Realplayer & Quicktime. My question is do I even need these two media players. I had a friend who told me that I shoule delete both of these programs & download the VLC media player. Is this true or should I keep both players & update like the OSI scan recommended?

I have installed Winpatrol & will use the tutorial to familiarize myself with the application. It looks like a great tool. Thank you very much.

The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.

I downloaded the .zip file to my desktop, when i extracted it Five icons appeared (I used extract here). One is called HOSTS & when i check out its properties it has no file extension. Three are text files & one is mvps, which is a MS-DOS Batch file. Which i assume is the actual program. Can i delete the 3 .txt files & the HOSTS or should i make a new folder on my desktop & extract the .zip file to the new folder? I hate having icons on my desktop that don't need to be there.

Also, dows this program run in the background? I clicked on the MS-DOS Batch file & a window popped up that said:

mvps.bat started from Directory: C:\Documents & Settings\Heath\Desktop\

The MVPS HOSTS FILE IS NOW UPDATED

Previous version saved & renamed to HOSTS.MVP

Is this what I am looking for it to do?

OK Muppy...last few questions

Do I need to download a firewall such as Comodo Free Firewall or Online Armor or is my Windows Firewall enough?

Do I need to use online scanners such as TrendMicro or Kaspersky Webscan/Kaspersky File Scanner?

Thank you again so much Muppy. I am very sorry I am so slow to grasp some of the concepts...I am new at this type of software. I am also including a new HJT log in another post in case it will help answer any of my questions Again, thanks so much...you are the best. I eagerly await your next advice. Have a great day.

Cheers,

Tater

Hi Mupp - Again, so many thanks. I cannot begin to express my gratitude over the interwebz!! My PC is running great. I do have a few questions if you don't mind.
Groannnnnnn @ questions

Glad it is running great and I will do my best with the questions. Keep in mind I am far from an expert with my forte being to spot bad files. I would like to point out the dangers of P2P while I am at it.

P2P PROGRAMS

IMPORTANT I notice there are signs of one or more P2P (Person to Person) File Sharing Programs on your computer.

Azureus

References for the risk of these programs can be found in these links:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/...rotection.mspx
http://www.techweb.com/wire/160500554
http://www.internetworldstats.com/articles/art053.htm

Note: Even if you are using a "safe" P2P program, it is only the program that is safe. You will be sharing files from uncertified sources, and these are often infected. The bad guys use P2P filesharing as a major conduit to spread their wares.

I noticed that Winamp agent & HP ToolboxFX ran at startup once again, which is something that i definitely do not need or want to happen. How can I fix this from happening in the future?
Start up programs are really a users choice for the most part. Some folk only leave Antivirus and other security programs at startup (essential) where as others might leave a program that they use all the time. Most will be started manually (if not on startup) when clicked on. This Site is a good source of information about the program you are thinking of disabling at startup.

Eg: copy and paste winampa.exe into the box, then click the green search button. Check the Name and Filename are what is showing on your machine. (not case sensitive). So the above search tells you it is Users choice. It then goes on to give you a description Loads the System Tray icon for the WinAmp media player. Can be used to mantain file associations so programs like QuickTime and RealPlayer don't take over as default player for various media types. Available via Start -> Programs

So that tells us it is available when needed, so if you don’t choose to have it on start up you can disable it.

One of the easiest ways to do this is click Start – Run and type misconfig in the run box and select ok. Choose the Startup tab. Uncheck winampa.exe then apply. You can exit without restart but take note when you do first restart you will get a message box advising you changes have been made. That is normal and you can click ok.

Also, should i remove the ESET scanner?
Yes that is fine to remove.

I only use Firefox now. Is there something that I need to do that is equivalent to this step or does this not apply with Firefox?
It does not apply with FF.

1. I have not seen the upgrade question yet. Upgrade if you are happy with the program, and yes try to run it every now and then so you know you are up to date.
2. Again really up to you and what you use. Be careful with quicktime as things like Itunes etc also use it and if removed could cause problems with the programs that need it.

Regarding MVPS Host file maybe the Download Help Page will be of assistance. It gives more detailed instructions.

A hosts file is not always to everyones liking, if you find that it is not to yours it can all be reversed. Just yell out if that is what you decide.

Do I need to download a firewall such as Comodo Free Firewall or Online Armor or is my Windows Firewall enough?
A third party firewall is highly recommended. Same rules as antivirus, only one to be used. If you do use one disable the windows firewall.

Do I need to use online scanners such as TrendMicro or Kaspersky Webscan/Kaspersky File Scanner?
These are great for an in depth scan when needed and the occasional check would not hurt. I do not think you need to use them as such. Mbam maybe once a week or more if you think you need it or have caught something and ATF as often as you like.

Thank you again so much Muppy
Not a problem at all and I hope the above helps. Just remember that protection programs do not save you from all that is out there. Being wary, where you surf, what you click on or download is equally important.
