Not sure if you missed this when doing the script
  • F:\Janna's Computer\downloaded programs\unlocker1.8.7.exe

Make sure you delete it if not.

Any problems or issues left?

I manually deleted that. It was a download from www.downloads.com, so I think it was probably safe. But, I wiped it out anyways.

Things seem to be running ok right now.

What do you think? Seems like we keep stumbling upon more bugs. Think we've got them all?

Logs are looking good and since you are not having any further problems, I would suggest you proceed as follows.

MBAM and ATF are great tools for you to keep and use on a regular basis.

Remove Combofix
  • Click START then RUN
  • Now type Combofix /u in the runbox and click OK ( please note the space between Combofix and the /,it is needed)
The above procedure will reset your System Restore and clear out the backups and quarantines created during the course of this fix.

Let's clear out the programs we've been using to clean up your computer, they are not suitable for general malware removal and could cause damage if used inappropriately.
  • Double-click OTM.exe. (Vista users, please right click on OTM.exe and select "Run as an Administrator")
  • Click the CleanUp! button.
  • Select Yes when the "Begin cleanup Process?" prompt appears.
  • If you are prompted to Reboot during the cleanup, select Yes.
  • The tool will delete itself once it finishes, if not delete it by yourself.

You can also remove System Look and the file it produced from your Desktop.

Now that the infection is gone lets try to keep it that way by following the below recommendations.

Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
  • Click once on the Security tab
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
    • Change the Initialise and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.

Here are some free programs I recommend that could help you improve your computer's security.

Update your Antivirus programs and other security products regularly to avoid new threats that could infect your system. If you do not update your anti virus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.

You can use one of these sites to check if any updates are needed for your pc.
Secunia Software Inspector
F-secure Health Check

Install WinPatrol
Download it from here
Here you can find information about how WinPatrol works here

Install MVPS Hosts File from here
The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know ad sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer.
Find Tutorial here : http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm

Read some information here how to prevent Malware.

Please reply if you have any problems or questions

Happy Safe Surfing

I've followed the cleanup procedures you listed. All seems ok.

I'm going to run a bunch of scans overnight tonight, and report back to you on the results.

Again, thank you so much for your help. Let's hope we got it all!

Viruses are back. I had my browser open (www.espn.com), and I left it open for a few hours. I came back to virus alerts, pop ups, and fake anti-virus crap on-screen.

I cleaned up some of it with MBAM, and have since added the pay version of MBAM. But, I'm still getting redirected sometimes, so it's not gone.

Well HJT looks ok.

Can you post the log of the things MBAM found.

NEXT Download and Run: RSIT
  • Download random's system information tool (RSIT) by random/random from here and save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on RSIT.exe to run RSIT.
  • Click Continue at the disclaimer screen.
  • Once it has finished, two logs will open. Please post the contents of both log.txt (<<will be maximized) and info.txt (<<will be minimized)

GMER Rootkit Scanner
Download GMER Rootkit Scanner from here.
  • Double click the .exe file. If asked to allow gmer.sys driver to load, please consent
  • If it gives you a warning about rootkit activity and asks if you want to run scan...click on NO

Click the image to enlarge it
  • In the right panel, you will see several boxes that have been checked. Uncheck the following ...
    • Sections
    • IAT/EAT
    • Drives/Partition other than Systemdrive (typically C:\)
    • Show All (don't miss this one)
  • Then click the Scan button & wait for it to finish
  • Once done click on the [Save..] button, and in the File name area, type in "Gmer.txt" or it will save as a .log file
  • Save it where you can easily find it, such as your desktop, and post it in reply
**Caution**
Rootkit scans often produce false positives. Do NOT take any action on any "<--- ROOKIT" entries

Please reply with:-
  • MBAM log
  • RSIT logs ( info.txt and log.txt)
  • GMER Log

Not really seeing a lot.

Download and Run ATF Cleaner

    Under Main choose: Select All
    Click the Empty Selected button.
(If you use FireFox or the Opera browser,To keep saved passwords, click No at the prompt.)
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

HostXpert
Download HostXpert from here & save it to your desktop
  • Right click on HostsXpert.zip and select Extract All...
  • Click Next on seeing the Welcome to the Compressed (zipped) Folders Extraction Wizard
  • Click on the Browse button. Click on Desktop. Then click OK
  • Once done, check (tick) the Show extracted files box and click Finish
  • Once extracted, HostsXpert folder will open
  • Double click on HostsXpert.exe to start it

Do the above then let me know if you are still being re-directed.

Ran these two apps, and yup, still getting popups. I purchased the pay-version of MBAM, and that alerts me of blocked malicious IP addresses as they happen. That catches half of the popups.
